NY POST - DEBLASIO: NAY ON BUGGY RIDES
Mayoral candidate Bill DeBlasio - the man to vote for
DeBlasio: Nay on Buggy Rides - NY Post - 3/7/13 - by David Seifman - Central Park's carriage horses have been thrust into the race for mayor, with Public Advocate Bill de Blasio pledging that one of his first acts as the city's chief executive would be to get them off the streets. "I would ban the horse carriages in Central Park within the first week on the job," de Blasio told a midtown forum Tuesday night sponsored by several Democratic progressive groups. "I think it's horrible what happens to the horses. I think it's unnecessary and doesn't do anything for our economy, much to the chagrin of the mayor who thinks it's at the center of our tourism economy." of the month," he predicted.

It happens that one of the four-legged industry's most reliable supporters is City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a major de Blasio mayoral rival who has resisted insistent demands by animal rights activists to replace the horses with antique motor cars. A Quinn spokesman said her position hasn't changed -- she wants as many protections as possible for the horses, but won't support putting them out to pasture. Bill Thompson, another leading mayoral contender, is on deBlasio's side. Longshot candidate Sal Albanese is taking the bridal path down the middle. "There are legitimate concerns on both sides here," he said. "The animals deserve humane care and the drivers deserve job security." In addition to jumping on the horse issue, de Blasio has been hammering Quinn for refusing to enact legislation requiring private employers to provide paid sick leave. Polls indicate he's not making much headway with that line of attack. Quinn maintains a large lead over all four Democratic rivals.

De Blasio allies say they're not worried by the numbers because most voters don't focus on the mayor's race until summer. As evidence, they point to de Blasio's run against Mark Green for Public Advocate in 2009. A Quinnipiac University poll issued June 17, 2009 gave Green 35 percent to de Blasio's 10 percent. The two finished neck-and-neck in a multi-candidate field in the primary. In the runoff two weeks later, de Blasio smashed Green 62 to 38 percent. Not everyone trying to stop Quinn is as certain she'll collapse on her own. One progressive Democrat is trying to line up an independent expenditure to pay for negative TV ads aimed squarely at Quinn. "You'll see some spending before the end of the month," he predicted.

NYC'S MAYORAL RACE WILL BE PICKING UP STEAM
please get active
For those of us who like honesty in government -- who were outraged when Speaker Quinn and Mayor Bloomberg ignored the will of the people and extended term limits in 2009 for their own selfish gain -- Speaker Christine, who is running for mayor, must be defeated. Please look at this excellent web site - Vote Quinn out. and if you are on Facebook - please "like" this page and come out to join the many protests. Defeat Christine Quinn.

There are many issues that will hopefully resonate with you but because this is a newsletter that addresses the carriage horse issue, please know that Quinn supports this inhumane, unsafe and exploitative carriage horse trade. She is not open to anything that will alter it in the slightest. Under her reign, no meaningful animal bill has ever passed. A vote for Quinn is a vote against animals.

DO NYC CARRIAGE DRIVERS PROVIDE EXCELLENT CARE FOR THEIR HORSES?
you be the judge
3-9-13 horse rubs This horse has serious harness rubs on her hind quarters -- the result of an ill-fitting harness. There are ways to correct this but it is obvious that this condition has been allowed to fester with the driver and owner ignoring it. The photo was taken on Saturday, March 9th. The ASPCA has been notified.

to support S667 and A997 - The horses need your help!
The horses need your help. The best way to lobby your representative is to meet in person. If anyone wants to do that, please contact us at coalition@banhdc.org. The next best thing is a snail mail letter. Please see our newsletter from last week for the names of all the Cities Committee members and the links to their pages. Then comes phone calls. They are effective also. The telephone list is divided into Senate and Assembly - please make as many phone calls as you can. All you have to say is: My name is ______ and I live in ______ (borough or other city if not New York.) I am calling in support of S667 (or A997 if you are calling an Assemblymember.) I would like to know if Senator ______ (or Assemblymember _______ ) will sponsor this bill, which would prohibit the operation of horse-drawn carriages in New York City. Please get back to me on this issue. I will call back in a few days if I do not hear from you. " You should leave your e-mail , telephone number and/or address.
