THE BILL IN ALBANY TO BAN HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES
Update
Many of you have asked if the bill to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC is still active because I had not mentioned it for a while. The sponsors of the bill are Tony Avella in the Senate and Linda Rosenthal in the Assembly. The current bill numbers are S5013 in the NYS Senate and A7748 in the State Assembly. It will be assigned a new identifying number in the state legislature in January.

However, if you have not signed our petition in support of the bill, you may still do that by clicking here.

AREA RESTRICTIONS
please note any violations
nose to tailpipe There are many tourists visiting New York City this time of year and many of the drivers will cheat in order to make more money. Please keep this in mind and contact us if you see a violation. Carriages are not allowed to work in this area before 11:30 pm. On Sunday it is before 7:30 pm.
  • TIME SQUARE AREA: on the north by 57th St.; south by 42nd .st and between 7th Ave. and 9th Ave.
  • LINCOLN CENTER AREA: on the north by 65th st; south by 57th st. and between Columbus and Amsterdam Ave.
  • ROCKEFELLER CENTER AREA: on the north by 57th st; south by 42nd st, and between Fifth and Sixth Ave. This is only true for Saturday up to 8 pm and Sunday up to 7pm

It is confusing to remember all of this so i ask that if you suspect it is a violation, please contact us with the following information and we will determine if it is:

  • picture of carriage including license plate, horse and driver and surrounding area
  • picture of identifying landmark to show where the picture was taken
  • a narrative with the license plate; color of horse and carriage and description of driver
  • e-mail me at [email protected]
  • CRUCIAL: you camera must be date and time stamped

WEATHER RESTRICTIONS
It has been warm in NYC but during the cold months, drivers are not allowed to work at 18 degrees or below. In addition, they are not allowed to work in snow, icy conditions or heavy rain. If you see any thing like this, please document it as indicated above and e-mail me at [email protected].

OTHER RESTRICTIONS
to look out for
  • CARRIAGE OCCUPANCY: no more than 4 adults; OR 2 adults and 4 kids all under 12; OR 3 adults and 2 kids all under 12
  • UNATTENDED & UNTETHERED: drivers are not allowed to leave their horse unattended and untethered. This happens all the time. If you see this, please document it and e-mail us.

VIDEO OF CARRIAGE HORSE LICKING GARBAGE PAIL
New York City's Ambassadors strike again
Why is this driver more focused on the person taking the video than making sure the horse does not lick the filthy Times Square garbage pail? Horse Licking Trash Can.

1075 is owned by Jason McManus from West Side Livery stable.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE AT HACK LINE
pigeon massacre
There are many hungry pigeons at the hack line trying to share grains with the horse. It is not uncommon for them to be killed by the carriage wheel, often decapitated. The drivers do not care. They laugh at it and at anyone who shows compassion for these creatures.

This is a blog written by one of our supporters. Can They Suffer? The article discusses what happens on the hack line to these birds and sums up saying "But let us not make the mistake of equating another animal's intellectual capacity to his right to live or her ability to suffer. As the moral philosopher Jeremy Bentham said, "The question is not, 'Can they reason?' nor, 'Can they talk?' but rather, 'Can they suffer?'"

ASPCA FINALLY TICKETS DRIVER FOR LEAVING HORSE UNATTENDED
Activists report him
Thanks to observant activists, a driver received a ticket today for leaving his horse at the hack line unattended. Although the horse was tied to a traffic pole, the danger, in leaving him unattended, is that any unknown stimuli can spook the horse. The fact that he is tied to a pole could make it a far worse disaster. This is the video.

The license plate number is 1042 owned by Timothy O'Conner from Clinton Stables.
