ANOTHER CARRIAGE ACCIDENT
Spooked horse takes off with passengers
An eyewitness e-mailed us to report yet another accident on Saturday night, December 8th. At about 11pm on 6th Ave around 51st and 52nd St. a horse pulling a carriage with six people, got stuck between some cars. He freaked out and bolted, running about two blocks, trying to run over some cars but finally stopping when he could not get beyond the cars stopped for a light. The driver, having lost control of the horse, jumped off at some point and the carriage continued with the passengers.

The passengers were yelling and screaming for help, according to the eye witness. She noted one bystander on the street running along side the carriage trying to evacuate it. He was able to remove a young boy. Unfortunately this eye witness did not have a camera but was able to get the plate number, which is 1066. The NYPD were on the scene.

Here again, it could have been much worse. We can not continue to tempt the fates. Horses are prey animals and can spook at the slightest provocation. They are unpredictable and can become unwitting weapons, injuring or killing themselves or others. They do not belong in the congested traffic of NYC.

This kind of thing has happened before and was documented. On January 22, 2002, A horse pulling a carriage got spooked and bolted at 10th Ave. and 56th St. His carriage got wedged between two cars and was so unnerved that he needed to be tranquilized. It took several people to free him. In May 1990, a NYC carriage horse named Tony was fatally injured when he was trapped between a bus and a car. May 15, 1990, Click here for the document.

More and more people are reporting accidents to us or other organizations. This is why we have learned of so many accidents lately. A Facebook member of No Walk in the Park reported on Dec 8 at 7:30 pm, carriage #1219 going westbound on 59th St almost ran over an NYPD Traffic Agent at north crosswalk at 6th Av because male driver jumped the red light. THANKS to all eye witnesses. We so appreciate you. And please continue to be observant. You may e-mail me at coalition@banhdc.org. Please document time, location, get license number on back of cab. Describe what happened and take pictures.

PITY THE POOR HORSES
Driver subjects his horse to cruelty from passengers
yank on bit This photo was taken on Saturday, December 8th. A driver allowed his passengers to pose with his horse. But notice that they are pulling on his bit from both sides - actually pulling it out of his mouth. This is very very painful to the horse.

We yelled at the driver to no avail. Then i went to get the plate number. He said to me "stay away from my carriage, you little shit."

NYC DRAMA - HOW NOT TO ACT AROUND A HORSE
carriage driver's head explodes - see video
water trough NY craziness at its finest. An activist recorded this on December 8, 2012 in the Times Square area. The story behind this is that the rubber wheel fell off the carriage. A bystander thought the driver was going to continue getting rides and he succeeded in preventing her from moving the horse by holding the lines. He said he would wait for the NYPD.

The important part of this video is how upset this woman is - pulling the horse by the bit; screaming and hitting the man and thoroughly upsetting the horse. The horse is not putting up with it and shows irritation with his ears back. He also pushes her away with his nose and will not hold still. The NYPD finally came and told the driver to lead the horse back to the stable. No arrests were made.

She does not cover her horse with a rain sheet until the end and she is feeding him off the filthy ground. Picture is of empty water trough near Fifth Avenue.
