TUESDAY 10/23/12 - VIGIL FOR CHARLIE HORSE
One-year anniversary of his death
Almost one year ago on October 23, 2011, we learned that a horse named Charlie collapsed and died on W. 54th St. on his way to work. This horse was found to have an ulcer and fractured tooth - something that should have been apparent to his owner if he cared about him at all. Charlie was yet another victim of this inhumane and unsafe trade. He had no one.
Please join with us for a candlelight vigil as we stand together in solidarity to once again ask the Mayor and City Council to put an end to this inhumane and unsafe business. We will honor the life of Charlie and remember all the other horses who have died while enslaved in this business.
- WHEN: Tuesday, October 23rd - 6:45-8:00 pm
- WHERE: northwest corner of Central Park South and Fifth Avenue
- Candles will be supplied. However, if you can, please bring your own in case we run out
- Please be there by 7:00 pm since it is possible we may leave the area.
NOTE: ALWAYS check our web site for up to date notices. If it rains, we will have to cancel.
LIGHT A VIRTUAL CANDLE FOR CHARLIE
if you cannot attend or even if you can
As this web site states "In many different traditions lighting candles is a sacred action. It expresses more than words can express. It has to do with gratefulness. From time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. Why should cyberspace not be sacred?"
Please light a candle in memory of Charlie Horse and all the other horses whose lives were taken in this inhumane business. We remember Smoothie, Spotty, Juliet, Clancy, Tony - to name a few. Click on this link and find a candle that is not lit to click on.
CHARLIE HORSE (DOG) TAGS
to commemorate Charlie's life and death
Once again, we are making Horse (dog) Tags available to commemorate the one year anniversary of Charlie's death. Charlie Horse died on October 23, 2011. He was on his way to work and collapsed on W. 54th St. His death resonated with many people throughout the world. Please remember him. The tags read:
- CHARLIE
- 10-23-11 R.I.P.
- NEW YORK CITY
- CARRIAGE HORSE
- WWW.BANHDC.ORG
The Horse Tag is shiny aluminum with a long chain. You can either wear it around your neck or put it on a key chain. They are $10, including postage. To order, please go to our donation page by clicking here. You can pay by check or use PayPal. Please indicate that it is for the Charlie Tag.
Thanks to everyone who has ordered one. They are all in the mail. We still have several left. Please hurry before they run out.
MAYORAL ELECTION IN 2013
Join demo against Speaker Christine Quinn on Tuesday October 23rd
In November 2013, we elect a new mayor of NYC. That cannot be Speaker Christine Quinn. Her record on animal issues is abysmal and contrived. Please join the demonstrations against her, designed to educate the public about her record. The one on Tuesday will be in front of an East Side Town Hall Meeting, which will be attended by many politicians. Let them know that a Quinn mayoral candidacy is unacceptable.
- WHEN: Tuesday, October 23rd - 5:15 - 6:30 pm
- WHERE: 11 E. 59TH St. (between Park and Lex) (Lighthouse International)
Join this demo first - than come over to our vigil! Only a few blocks away.
STATE LEGISLATION TO BAN HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES
A ban of the horse-drawn carriage trade in NYC must NOT be dependent on the success of a private industry - i.e., electric cars. This is why we do not support Intro 86A but do support the Avella/Rosenthal bill in Albany. Sign our petition if you have not already by clicking here. Read my blog to understand why we say this. BEAUTIFUL ART WORK OF HORSES AVAILABLE
to help our campaign
Long Island artist Teresa Vecere has generously donated her art work to our campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC. Please click here to see the beautiful horse art work available -- they are reasonably priced prints of the originals, ideal for matting and framing and perfect for gifts. They are professionally printed Glicee prints on fine art archival paper. Prints are only $30.00, which includes shipping. Please contact us at coalition@banhdc.org for shipping outside the US.
We are also making available - courtesy of the artist, the original digital collage of "Charlie's City, " which had been entered into a juried art show. It is 19" wide x 27" high. It is printed on canvas and incorporates pieces of the news story of Charlie's death. The image of Charlie is reflected in the horse's eye. It is based on the original, which is of the carriage horse only and uses graphite, charcoal and watercolor on board. The piece will be hand signed by the artist.
We would like to auction this off to the highest bidder starting at $250.00. If anyone is interested in bidding, please send your offer to coalition@banhdc.org. If you have any questions about the piece, please e-mail at the same address and I will try to answer them.
