Fort Polk Update

A
public meeting will be held on Friday, March 8 from 2pm to 4pm at the War Memorial Civic Center located at 250 W. 7th Street in DeRidder to hear updates and gather information on the proposed Army Programmatic Environmental Assessment for Fort Polk.

Mike Reese, President of Fort Polk Progress ,will give a presentation on the recent assessment by the  Department of the Army concerning a possible troop reduction of approximately 5,300 soldiers and Army civilians at Fort Polk. Not included in that figure are contractors, support personnel and dependents.

Such a reduction of force at Fort Polk would have a tremendous negative impact on the economy of Vernon & Beauregard Parish, the region and the state of Louisiana, since Fort Polk is the largest employer in the state.

The public meeting will address information contained in the Department of the Army's Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) and draft Finding of No Significant Impact for Army force structure reductions and realignments that may occur from Fiscal Years 2013-2020, specifically in reference to the evaluation of the impact of force structure reductions at Fort Polk.

The public, as well as the business community is urged to attend. This event is part of a regional collaboration between parishes and elected officials supporting Fort Polk, it's soldiers and quality of life issues. For more information on the meeting, please contact Avon Knowlton, SWLA Economic Development Alliance Director of Member and Investor Services, at (337)433-3632 ext. 215 or 496-5064 or by email at
