Banquet Program: All About Teamwork

At the 109th Chamber SWLA Banquet, Col. Greg Gadson shared his message on the importance of teamwork and the power of relationships. His message echoed the partnerships and programs that the Chamber and its umbrella organization, the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, have been building in the name of workforce, leadership, and educational development.

The question of the night was - as a region is poised for an economic boom, are we ready?  George Swift, Chamber SWLA President & CEO, asked the 1000 guests in attendance if they were ready to maximize this opportunity - securing the future our region for generations to come - by working together and making this boom a catalyst for thoughtful, planned, long-term development.

Other highlights of the evening included the passing of the gavel from 2012 Chair Bill Monk of Stockwell Sievert Law Firm to 2013 Chair Ben Bourgeois of Turner Industries; the presentation of the 2012 Volunteer of the Year award to Erin Davison of Business Health Partners, and the presentation of the Civic Service award to Jennie Finch-Daigle. This year, the Civic Service Award was presented by Mayor Chris Duncan of Sulphur and Mayor Randy Roach of Lake Charles.

The Alliance is committed to developing our future leaders and making Southwest Louisiana a better place to live and work.  To take advantage of this upcoming boom, the Alliance is bringing the business community together to work as never before as a regional team.  Other presentations made during the annual banquet included The Leader in Me ,The Next Generation Initiative, and an update on the SEED Center. The Leader In Me brings the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People into the Elementary School setting improving testing scores and lowering disciplinary problems at every school involved. The Alliance's goal is to bring The Leader In Me to every elementary in the five-parish region.

The Next Generation Initiative - funded in large part by L'Auberge Casino Resort - is an effort to make our region attractive to the next generation of workers and to build upon the leadership transfer between generations. The Next Generation effort will be focused on organizing young professionals in the region to be an important part of contributing to the continued growth of Southwest Louisiana.

The Southwest Louisiana Entrepreneurial and Economic Development (SEED) Center is nearing completion. It is currently under construction across from McNeese State University on Ryan Street. It will house a one-stop economic development center and our region's first full-scale business incubator. The SEED Center will provide entrepreneurial training for its business incubator clients and the business community as a whole. It will also play a large role in developing the next generation of business owners through McNeese State University's Innovation Center.

This year's annual banquet was sold out. There were over 1000 guests.
