Q & A |
Q: Do Baha'is have a special prayer they say for grace at meals?
A: Although Baha'is do not practice the custom of saying grace before meals, the following prayer is sometimes used when one is asked to say a prayer before a meal.
He is God! Thou seest us, O my God, gathered around this table, praising Thy bounty, with our gaze set upon Thy Kingdom. O Lord! Send down upon us Thy heavenly food and confer upon us Thy blessing. Thou art verily the Bestower, the Merciful, the Compassionate. ~Abdu'l-Baha |

In 1912, 'Abdu'l-Bahá, the son of the founder of the Bahá'í Faith, traveled from coast to coast across America after a lifetime of imprisonment and persecution. He called on America to become a land of spiritual distinction and leadership and gave a powerful vision of America's spiritual destiny - to lead the way in establishing the oneness of humanity.

On Sharing our Thanksgiving Feast
 | |
Abdu'l-Baha at a picnic feast,
Morristown, New Jersey, 1912 |
During the Thanksgiving season, amidst the bustle of grocery shopping, preparation, cooking, and cleaning, we may struggle to keep our focus on sharing and hospitality rather than on the feast before us. Abdu'l-Baha, son of the Founder of the Baha'i Faith, always taught by His good example, and was both a gracious host and guest at many a feast during His travels in Europe and America in 1912.
Abdu'l-Baha often gathered with others at mealtime just to add joy to the occasion, even when He was not hungry. When entertaining visitors, Abdu'l-Baha often cooked and filled His guests' plates Himself, which was contrary to the custom of the time, which was to have servants do so. When He was the guest, Abdu'l-Baha encouraged those who entertained Him to do so with simplicity, and He enjoyed flowers and fruit in abundance. MORE>>>
Abdu'l-Baha's recipe for pilau:Lamb-cut in very small pieces-cutting away all fat, bone, gristle. Put butter in frying pan and when it bubbles, stir in the meat and continue to stir constantly until the meat is done. Season with salt. Raisins-look them over and wash them. Cook with equal amount of Syrian pine nuts-in another frying pan in same manner as lamb-in butter-stir nuts and raisins constantly. When ready to serve, mix most of nuts and raisins with the meat, using more meat than nuts and raisins. Place this mixture in the center of a serving platter and arrange a border of cooked rice around it, using the remaining nuts and raisins as decoration, according to taste.
