Whether the redesign is aimed at cheaper production, better packaging, or better eating experience, the result is increased tendency toward weight gain. Discussion Leader: Julia Takarada. Sunday, June 26, 10:00am
"Postmodernism and the Legacy of the Enlightenment"
In many ways contemporary culture is caught between a dedication to science and the use of rationality on the one hand and a skepticism about the human ability to be rational combined with moral relativism on the other.  The tension between these two outlooks is present within UU circles. One way of looking at these issues is to see them as a struggle between Postmodernism and the continuing influence of the Enlightenment.  This sermon will try to shed some light on these questions. Our Affiliated Community Minister, Rev. Dr. Jerome Stone speaking.
Soup Kitchen Volunteers Needed
 soupkitchens
Can you help out with our summer commitment to St. Paul's Church (on Greenwood) for their Summer Sunday Soup Kitchen? We need 11 people at a minimum to "lobby-sit" this summer.

St. Paul's  is doing a large renovation of their kitchen. They normally serve Sunday "dinner" every week. We need one or two lobby minders each Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30. The St. Paul's people will be bringing all the food and coordinating serving and clean-up. We need to welcome guests and let them in, send them to the sanctuary for drinks and then at the end of the afternoon make sure everything is cleaned up and the building empty. We will be making a little checklist for everyone so you know what we need done. Essentially you will be in the lobby-so you can visit with your friends, knit, read, or work on the computer.  This is a good opportunity for new members to find out how the building "works."  Don't worry, we will train you! Questions: Carol Nielsen.

Refugee Project Starts with a Bang!

Thanks to everyone who donated in the past week. We felt quite thwarted on Sunday when we found the URL didn't work. But despite that we are more than half way to our goal of $8000.

We will continue to make personal contacts to encourage people to donate. We hope that if you have donated, you will now ask your friends and family to make a contribution.

We are so pleased with the generosity shown by everyone. It is exciting to think about who our family will be and how we can help them settle in the United States. The news this week from Syria is devastating.

We are humbled by what the Syrian people have to go through. Thank you so much for thinking of them and helping to offer a safe life in Chicago. Here is the correct URL to make a donation or share with others
Reparations Study Advocacy reparations
UCE has proposed an Action of Immediate Witness to the UUA Commission on Social Witness.  Our Reparations Study AIW is now one of three that will be considered by the delegates at the upcoming General Assembly.

Please see

Unlike a Statement of Conscience, which involves a three-year competitive selection process, an AIW does not carry the full weight of the UUA.  Rather, it expresses the conscience and carries the authority of the delegates at the GA at which it is passed.  Adopted AIW's are used by congregations in local efforts and empower the UUA Washington Office for Advocacy to take action and recommend action through other UU groups.
UCE Basic Food Group basicfoodgroup
A book discussion continues every other Friday at 5pm on the book: Women, Food and God by Geneen Roth. The group is not really about women or God but definitely about food. And how it affects our spirits and vice versa. Join us this Friday June 3 at 5pm at UCE.  All genders welcome. Our next meeting may be at a different location. Contact Shirley Adams or Noel Yovovich for more info.
Family Potluck Karaoke/Game Night Sponsored by the New Member Committee Friday, July 8, 6-9pm familypotluckkaraokegame
Join us at UCE for a fun Friday night activity for all ages. Bring a dish to share - something easy - and your favorite family game. We'll sing some karaoke and have a great time together.
