Worship Service - 9:15 and 11:00am
"This is what I am interested in now..."
The second half of life is finding meaning and growing up. I came to UCE in 1999. In the 17 years to today, where have we been and how have we finally grown up? A reflection on the journey toward spiritual maturity. Rev. Sue Sinnamon speaking. Sue Sinnamon was Minister of Religious Education at UCE from 1999 until 2007. She works full time as a Spiritual Director. She created the Clergy Seminar in Congregation Based Spiritual Direction. She is Assistant Minister at First UU Richmond, VA and adjunct staff at Richmond Hill Virginia as a Spiritual Director.

Childcare for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers is available from 9:00-12:30.
Spiritual Journeys - a 3 Part Discussion
Sundays, April 24 and May 1, 10:15-11am
We'll explore our religious and spiritual backgrounds, where we come from, what we want to cherish and what we want to release as we continue our journeys. This is a conversation open to all no matter where you are on the path - exploring membership, new members and long-term members alike.
Rummage Sale Setup Begins - 12:30pm
Crackerbarrel - 9:30am
"Scandinavian Economies"
The Scandinavian countries are fairly equal with high standards of living. But does the welfare state deserve credit for this state of affairs? When Sweden took democratic socialist policies further than its neighbors from 1970 to 1990, its economy fell more sharply, with real wages stagnating. Abandoning Bernienomics in the 1990s, Sweden saw real wages rise by about 2/3 in the following two decades. For the United States to be more like modern Sweden would mean more deregulation, freer trade, a national school voucher system, partially privatized pensions, no property tax, no inheritance tax, much lower corporate taxes and highly regressive value-added taxes as a major revenue source. Discussion Leader: Scot Campbell
The Chris Isely Cancer Support Group

The group is open to anyone facing cancer, either personally or through a family member or friend. This lay-led group is a safe place for sharing and hope. Interested participants are encouraged to drop in any time. Questions? Contact Renee Hoff or Brian Meister.

Being Mortal
Tuesdays, May 3, 10, 17 & 24, 7:00 - 9:00pm
|
Join us to gain new insights into such important current issues as quality of life, crucial conversations, advance directives, hospice care, and elective dying as we explore the book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End (Metropolitan Books, 2014), available at the Book H.Author Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon, turns his attention to age and infirmity, and how 'the medicalization of death' is failing us. Noting the difficulties that doctors and relatives have with end of life issues, Gawande argues that survival should not be the main concern, but rather well-being. In a war you cannot win "You don't want a general who fights to the point of total annihilation," he suggests. "You don't want Custer. You want Robert E. Lee who knows how to fight for territory that can be won and how to surrender when it can't." Facilitated by Cathy Deamant, Carol Nielsen, and Dick Whitaker.
Please sign up on the Religious Education bulletin board near the Lobby or with the UCE office at learning@ucevanston.org or 847-864-1330.

CRS, UUANI, UU Prison Ministry News
|
These three areas are reinforcing each other lately. UUANI (UU Advocacy Network of Illinois) is supporting CRS (Community Renewal Society) issues on economic and racial justice (Fair Tax, police accountability, and removing some bans on employment, 11 of us in Springfield April 12). We had success with an employment opportunity bill in health care. UUANI is also stretching us into environmental justice (Clean Jobs bill reducing carbon emissions by renewables, efficiency and incentives in power generation targets in Illinois) in Springfield April 21, and with comments cards from members to legislators. UUANI also supports the UU Prison Ministry of Illinois on advocacy - employment, state ID's for released prisoners, and reduced use of solitary confinement.
UUPMI held a well-attended multi-church workshop with Chris Crass on racial justice, UU, and prisons, building skills and involvement in the UUPMI. We are still planning to hire a quarter time minister in June to work in prisons starting July.
Dennis Wilson presented for CRS on Fair Tax, which is a live bill as a constitutional amendment, Saturday April 16 at First Congregational in Evanston.
