Worship Service - 9:15 and 11:00am
"Sticky Church"
In their book Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, Chip and Dan Heath list six features of a sticky idea. It is simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional, and evokes a story. As a movement we've preached a lot of sticky ideas over the centuries: "One God, Not Three," "Give Them Hope, Not Hell," "Revelation is Never Sealed." What's our sticky idea for the 21st Century? Rev. Bret Lortie speaking.

The Serendipity Auction Has Something for Everyone in the Family
By: Jessica Tomell-Presto auction
One of my favorite events at UCE is coming up in a few weeks, the Serendipity Auction.  I like the auction because it has something for everyone in my family.  We all enjoy the chance to get dressed up and eat a nice meal at a great price.  We each usually find something in the silent auction on which we are excited to place a bid.

Our favorite Serendipity Auction purchase was a teepee that is still beloved by my daughters and all the neighborhood kids.  The silent auction offers everything from gift certificates for local businesses to beautiful works of art and jewelry made by members of the congregation.

Additionally, wonderful group activities are offered.  One year my family won tickets to a root beer tasting event at a UCE family's home.  Other favorites we love to bid on are archery lessons and game nights. Each of these offerings is unique and can be accessible to a variety of budgets. Click here to read more.
Recently Retired (but Never Retiring!) Women
Tuesday, October 27, 5:30pm retiredwomen
This Tuesday, October 27, at our regular 4th Tuesday meeting, Kate Poole will be leading a conversation around the issue of "Creativity." During our professional lives, we were expected to, and enjoyed the process of, "thinking outside the box." Now, there is no such expectation. We can do what we want--we're retired, right? After our potluck at 5:30, let's consider that. All retired women are cordially invited to attend, whether it's your first or your 20th time! Contact Margie Rogasner for more information.
Sing Thing
Wednesday, October 28, 7pm at UCE singthing
All are welcome: if you play a folk type musical instrument (or anything else that would blend with guitars and banjos), please bring it. Or just come and sing along!
Join the Mentoring Post and the Food and Shelter Team for an interesting movie! Sunday, November 8, 12:20pmfilmscreening
We will screen "SHOW ME THE WAY: How Mentoring Impacts a Young Person's Life." We are learning about the important impact mentoring has on youth to assure their success in college and careers. Young adults who attend college or technical school and have an expressed plan to a career or job are much less likely to end up homeless, in a detention center, or incarcerated. This movie shares the stories of five urban high school kids with very diverse needs and backgrounds as they navigate the challenges of home and school life while utilizing the dedication of a mentor. We watch as these young adults attempt to realize their dreams via partnership, education and very hard work. Snacks provided and short discussion afterwards

About 20 UCE members participatedin the Community Renewal Society (CRS) annual membership assembly and action this month. CRS is a 130+ year old organization of churches in the Chicago area working as a grassroots organization on issues of race and poverty.  Each year it identifies issues of concern to its membership, which is largely African American, and develops a short list of concrete, meaningful, winnable campaigns to make positive change happen.  UCE is a member church and has been an active participant in these campaigns, through petitions, meeting with legislators locally and in Springfield, and testifying on why the issues are important to us.  In the past year we have had several victories. Rev. Bret Lortie will lead the group at least twice a month, with members of the group leading on other Thursdays. Generally this will be led in the Insight (or Vipassana) tradition, but other traditions will be respected and perhaps explored by participants. The group is open and anyone can join us on any Thursday evening they are able.
