March 2015

Home Funerals bring up the image of neighbors gathering around to support the family and the event. How many times has it been sounded that the event was 'inspiring and so right'!

The same is to be said about our Canadian neighbors. This issue includes some of the activities and people who are building the foundation for our mutual work on the topic of home funerals and education. The work is more accessible because of their engagement. We hope you will find this to be so as you read this newsletter.

CANADIAN COMMUNITY of DEATH MIDWIFERY

Former NHFA Board Member Cassandra Yonder has been a driving force in organizing the Canadian Community of Death Midwifery.

From her homestead in Nova Scotia, she advocates for change not only in the way we care for our dead but for the way we think about death. To learn more about the CCDM, read on here

YOUR OPINION NEEDED NOW!
The NHFA board looking of help from our members in addressing the different titles that we use to describe our services. We want our terminology to be easy for the public and the press to understand, and as familiar to the general population as possible so they know what - and who - to ask for when the need arises.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Pashta MaryMoon
"I have been involved directly with dying people since the beginning of the AIDs crisis in the 80's, while at the bedside of too many people who 'disappeared' (taken by a funeral home, and never seen again, due to direct cremation) within an hour of their death."

Read more in our interview with Pashta here

A Note from the NHFA President

Dear Reader,

Last month I talked to you about privacy issues. We have since had to make the tough decision to take down our Member List permanently for all of our protection. Cyber hacking and data mining are real concerns for all of us, and being a member of the NHFA should not create a situation where your digital identity is put at risk or or where you could be solicited without invitation.

For all of you who wish to be found by other members and the public, PLEASE join our directories! It's easy! Look in the left hand blue column for complete descriptions and instructions.

And to those of you who select directories while applying for membership, please note that you will not be added to directories until you contact us directly. PLEASE check only those that you feel you are well qualified for!

Thanks for your understanding -
Lee Webster, President
National Home Funeral Alliance
