THE RISE OF BACK TO BASIC FUNERALS
with Amy Cunningham

In case you missed it, be sure to read the March 12, 2014 article in the New York Times featuring Amy Cunningham, The Rise of Back to Basic Funerals. Amy is an ardent supporter of the home funeral movement and the NHFA who is reaching out with her own unique style and perspective to further the mission of funeral reform. Check out her blog, too, at The Inspired Funeral.

HOME SPUN HOME FUNERALS:
History Repeating
by Gerald W. Kowalski, Jr., BSCSc, MSN, MPH, CNS, ST

Soul Midwife, and proud member of the NHFA

Great Grampa's viewing at home in the double bay parlor windows he built himself

"Perhaps we were old-fashioned, or perhaps we were ahead of our time. The rituals and practices of home funerals were a natural part of my life spanning a generation or two before and after my youth. In retrospect, the continuity of care always came full circle, primarily due to the fact that I come from a close knit family of nurses and funeral directors..."

Talking Points

TALKING POINTS: tips for how to talk about home funerals to the media, hospital personnel and others

Many of us have trouble with stage fright, and find it easier going on stage with a script. Talking Points is a new resource in Member Resources that may help you get started with confidence when talking with reporters and others about the benefits of home funerals, or explaining why you would like to see a change in the burial requirements in your local cemetery, or when presenting policy suggestions to your local hospice or hospital administration. Take what works and improvise the rest! (Become a Member to access!)
EDUCATION COMMITTEE SEEKS NEW MEMBERS

Interested in working with others to develop new home funeral materials and resources? Do you often find interesting home funeral related items that you want to share? Join with others who are as enthusiastic as you are about spreading the word about home funerals! Contact Susan Oppie or Cassandra Yonder
