December 2013

The year is wrapping up and what a great year it has been here at the National Home Funeral Alliance. We had a wonderful conference in October and we have four new board members dedicated to the work of spreading the word about home funerals across the country.
We hope you've had a great year too and we look forward to more work together in 2014. Happy holidays!

Conference 2013 Wrap-Up:

A Community of Home Funeral Devotees

More than 70 home funeral enthusiasts gathered in Raleigh, NC, this October for three days of sharing and learning. Headliners Megory Anderson PhD, Dr. Monica Williams-Murphy, and Char Barrett wowed the crowd with new perspectives on how home funerals inform and support families as we move through the end-of-life cycle. Jerrigrace Lyons and Olivia Bareham presented a body care overview to a large crowd, some of whom had never witnessed the home funeral process before. Dyanne Matzkevich led a tour through Pine Forest green burial cemetery. The tour was a great addition to Freddie Johnson's thorough preparation on the history of green burials the day before. The annual conference provides an invaluable chance for anyone interested in home funeral to network, learn and share heartfelt face-to-face experiences and questions.

Your Home Funeral Slide Carousel and Press Kit

If you weren't in Raleigh for the unveiling of the new slide carousel and tips on how to use it, find it now under Member Resources. You have to be logged in to your membership account to access this kit. If you're not a member yet, register here. It's free! Once there you'll find a downloadable group of slides that you can tweak to create a consistent, attractive slide show to use when speaking with any group. Choose from the basics of home funeral facts and info, add supplemental slides, photos, or make your own. Also included is a section on how to create a show that is really your own, and a bonus document, Your Press Kit, that will help you draw the crowd to see it.

Our expanding website

If you haven't checked out the NHFA website recently, carve out some time soon to visit our new Education and Resources pages. The Education pages focus on providing information and contacts for specific groups, such as home funeral guides, professionals, and faith communities. We are always looking for and adding new resources, articles and interviews, so if you have anything to say or want to learn more about something not covered, send it along to

You are the NHFA

The NHFA exists to provide you, its members, with whatever resources you need to continue this profound work. On the website you will find the email addresses and phone numbers of your board of directors so you can reach someone easily with your thoughts and concerns. Help us help you. For contact info, go to About us.

Remember, we keep track of our work around the country. Could you please tell us how many home funerals you have heard about this past year and where? Quick email to Thanks!

Needing your support in more ways
In an effort to broaden the tent, our membership requirements have been changed to include everyone who signs up as a lifetime member at no cost. As a result, we will now be relying exclusively on voluntary donations. To run the organization, we need funds to host the website, enable our board of directors to do business, and provide outreach to the public. We have launched our first fundraising campaign and hope you will be as generous of pocket as you are of spirit.

Upcoming conferences

Several conferences are shaping up, including the NHFA's for fall of 2014. Anyone interested in helping can contact our Secretary, Kristine Bentz at

Also in the works is the annual Funeral Consumer Alliance Conference this coming June 5-7 at the Park Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis. Learn more by going to their website

We are happy to have you as a friend of the NHFA. We appreciate your support and look forward to working together in 2014 to advance the understanding of home funerals across the country.
