TAYLOR MALI: WHAT TEACHERS MAKE
|
Watch Taylor Mali break down what teachers do. Then substitute the word "teacher" for "coach" and think about your role as a coach in your young athletes' lives. Remember, YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE...you don't know where each skater came from that day. Did mom or dad yell at them, did the teacher send them to see the principal, did they just get a poor grade or bullied by someone at school? Did they have a fight with a girlfriend or boyfriend? Are they having a bad day so that when they come to the rink, they may not be in the best mood? They may be looking for an hour of fun and enjoyment. Are they getting that, or are they getting the coach yelling at them, criticizing their every mistake, calling them out in front of teammates? Or instead, are they getting a supportive coach, willing to help them, encouraging them, allowing them to try new moves and to fail? Which coach are you? Do you just tolerate the skaters on your team or do you try to make a difference? Remember to ask yourself, "would I want me as a coach?"

GROWING RINK MEANS GROWING ASSOCIATION NEAR CHICAGO
By Greg Bates, Special to USA Hockey ~ June 2014 marked a turning point for the Park District of Oak Park Hockey Academy (OPHA) in Illinois. Renovations were transforming Ridgeland Common Ice Arena from a six-month-per-year rink to a year-round rink. That gave OPHA the opportunity to expand what it offered in its program. "That's kind of been the rebirth of our program," said Kyle Sandine, the aquatic and rink manager. "It's something the community was maybe a little bit hesitant about, making it year-round with the ice arena, but given the staff that we have now, they've done a remarkable job of showing that we're a quality program and getting people excited about being here. The kids are raving about it. 'When can I get back on the ice? I wish you guys have more ice.' The kids love it that much." FULL ARTICLE>>

HOCKEY-RELATED CONCUSSIONS DECLINE AT E.Rs SINCE PEE WEE BODYCHECKING BAN TOOK EFFECT
This article comes from our friends up north. Many have questioned the wisdom of moving checking to 14U. A recent study done in a few provinces of Canada may give you some confidence in that decision. While we have not yet seen a study like this in the U.S., this is interesting data to support that decision. You may also notice that embedded in the article is a link describing Hockey Canada making the same move for their Pee Wee aged kids and following suit with USA Hockey just a year later.
By Robson Fletcher, CBC News ~ Fewer kids have been showing up at hospital emergency rooms with hockey-related brain injuries since bodychecking was banned at the peewee level in 2013, according to new data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Alberta ERs saw 29.9 per cent fewer brain injuries among hockey players aged 10 to 14 in the two years after the ban was implemented, compared to the two years prior. Ontario, meanwhile, saw a reduction of 20.3 per cent. FULL ARTICLE>>

MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES STAR AT 2016 NATIONAL JUNIOR EVALUATION CAMP
Studies show that athletes who specialize too early in a specific sport don't reap the benefits that multi-sport athletes do when facing a wide range of physical challenges. For multiple players at the 2016 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp, held early this month in Plymouth, Michigan, the off-season sports such as baseball, golf and other activities made them better hockey players. USA Hockey spoke with these players about their experience playing multiple sports growing up.

USA HOCKEY HOSTS YOUTH SAMPLING EVENTS
USA Hockey, working in collaboration with the Aspen Institute, the Cheyenne Mountain School District and fellow sport NGBs, has created an after-school sport-sampling program designed to provide low-cost, high-benefit physical education for school children. The program's purpose is to enhance children's physical literacy, combat early single-sport specialization and offset the reduction in physical education that has occurred in many elementary and middle schools throughout the United States.
