SIX ILLINOIS ASSOCIATIONS MEET 2 AND 2 CHALLENGE GOALS

2 AND 2 CHALLENGE: WHAT IT IS AND WHO REACHED IT IN ILLINOIS
By Jim Clare, AHAI VP of Membership
The 2 and 2 Challenge is a comprehensive growth program for local associations. The program guides youth hockey leadership through national programs and tools to reach their growth goals of acquiring two new players and retaining two additional players than the previous season's total. To complete the 2 and 2 Challenge, associations utilize three programs that drive growth - Retention, Acquisition &Conversion.
RETENTION - Welcome Back Week September 19th- 25th - Reaching out with a personal invitation to return to youth hockey is crucial. For this program, associations coordinate phone calls inviting families back to youth hockey.
ACQUISITION -Try Hockey For Free Days November 12th & February 25th - Try Hockey events provide associations the opportunity to attract new families to the rink. Last season, over 26,000 kids were introduced to youth hockey through this program. CONVERSION -Transition Program - Children that sample youth hockey do not always become new hockey players. A low-cost, low-commitment program to easily transition families from trying hockey to participating in youth hockey programs will significantly increase the likelihood of adding more players. Examples of how this can be achieved is offering a Learn-to-Play program or mixing prospective players into existing beginner programs. While many associations experienced growth, only Arctic Ice Arena, Bloomington Recreational Hockey, Decatur Youth Hockey Association, Glenview Park District, Leafs Hockey Club and Park District of Oak Park successfully met their 2 and 2 Challenge goals of growing by two for both new and retained players. Congratulations to them all.

QUESTION: My son is a sophomore this year. He attends a private high school that doesn't have a hockey team. What do we need to do so he can join a high school team? Is it possible for him to join the closest High School team and continue playing hockey? Please let me know what options he has for playing high school hockey.
ANSWER: Thanks very much for your inquiry. I can see you are a parent concerned about your son and his hockey experiences. It can be most unfortunate, but not all hockey players can play HS hockey. HS hockey like any other sport in HS is very much dependent on the school your son attends. If the HS he attends does not have a hockey program, or is not party to a HS combined program, then he cannot play HS hockey. READ MORE>>

WHAT IS AN OFFICIAL? USA HOCKEY & IHOA'S VIEWPOINT
By Dave Zednik, IHOA Vice President
Officials Are Teachers: The official's role is not only to interpret and apply the rules during a game, but also to teach. Players, coaches, parents and spectators all rely on the official to properly apply the rules and learn from the official's actions.
Officials as Game Managers: Officiating at intermediate and higher levels (pee wee through midget), an official's role includes both a "teacher" and also that of a "game manager." A "game manager" will use judgment to carefully manage the game in a safe and fair environment. In a game management situation, the official analyzes the entire picture prior to drawing a conclusion as to whether an infraction has occurred or should be penalized. Good judgment will not hide the lack of knowledge of the rules. READ MORE>>
