RELEASE YOUR CHILD TO THE GAME!
|
"I don't know where to turn," an exasperated dad recently told me after a speaking event. "My son is fast, and he is skilled. We do lots of extra practice, we go to a private skills coach, we are doing everything it takes to get to the next level, but something is not right. He is not doing as well as he should. He seems to have lost his motivation. What should we do?"
"We?" I asked the dad. "You keep using the word 'we.' Whose experience is this; his, or yours?"
The dad paused for a second, looked at me, and said with a defeated look, "Wow, I never thought of it like that. It's not we; it's he. Oh man."
Thankfully, that dad had a revelation that evening, realizing for the first time that he had claimed his son's youth sports experience for himself. He loved his son. He wanted only the best, and saw in him great potential. Sadly, he was not loving his son in a helpful way.
He had made his son's experience his own. In the process, he was stealing one thing his young son could never get back: ownership of a positive youth sports experience. At least this dad realized it was never too late to change.
Many parents come to us at the Changing the Game Project because they are frustrated. They see great potential in their son or daughter, but they don't see a passion to compete, to practice, or to take advantage of the opportunities to improve. READ MORE>>

ADM: IT'S ABOUT GROWING THE GAME! As part of the recent IIHF World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend, several clubs participated by hosting Try Hockey For Free events including the St. Jude Knights and Franklin Park Panthers. The essence of the American Development Model at its purest form is development and growth. Both these clubs exemplified that this past weekend. St. Jude Knights Girls Director Jackie Kooistra-Wedster stated, "I believe the girls Try Hockey events are not only important to grow the sport of girls' hockey, but also because it shows the girls just how strong they can be. A lot of girl athletes don't even give hockey a try not only because of the athlete themselves, but the parents think hockey is a sport for boys. Being able to put these events on for athletes in my community and showing families that hockey is for EVERYONE is my ultimate goal." Brit Volini, Franklin Park Ice Arena Assistant Manager, hosted 20 girls new to hockey. Also attending the event were players from her Pink Panthers girls' team as well as Olympian Caitlin Cahow. FARMING ATHLETES AT 10U
By Michael Caples, Special to USA Hockey ~ Just like a field of crops, you don't want to harvest your hockey player too early. Air Force men's hockey assistant coach Joe Doyle says that you can't rush long-term athlete development.
"When you plant a crop, you have to first prepare the soil, make sure the right ingredients and everything are in there, and put your crop in," Doyle said. "And from there, water it appropriately, make sure it gets the appropriate amount of sun and all that. In a natural process, you can't speed that process that up. If you try to water the heck out of it, it's going to get too much water, and not react appropriately. If you try to hurry it along with too much sun, it's the same; it's going to backfire." The same thing can be said for hockey players. READ MORE>>

8U HOCKEY - GETTING MORE OF WHAT'S GOOD
|
By Jim Hague, Special to USA Hockey ~ Giancarlo Sears may only be 6 years old, but he already knows one of the most important aspects of hockey. "I love to pass the puck to everybody," said Giancarlo, who plays for the Woodbridge Wolfpack 6U squad. "I've been looking forward to this day for a long time." His teammate, 5-year-old John Gall, wasn't as patient. "Are we going to play yet?" John asked his mother, Victoria Porcaro. "It's so exciting to be here."
The youngsters were at the Wayne Ice Vault this past weekend to take part in an American Development Model 8U Jamboree, a two-day smorgasbord of hockey for kids who are beginning their march down the hockey path. READ MORE>>
