MID-SEASON MITE CROSS-ICE CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

On December 28, USA Hockey and AHAI will take over the United Center for the Mid-Season Mite Cross-Ice Classic Tournament. AHAI Mite 8U teams will have the opportunity to participate in a cross-ice tournament that will include a minimum of 3 games, a championship, and lots of giveaways, including t-shirts and awards for the winners to name just a few. Participating teams will also get to watch a Chicago Blackhawks practice right in the middle of the tournament!

The United Center ice will be transformed into three ice surfaces with teams competing in three divisions: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The concourse will be hopping; concession stands will be open and lots of activities available between games.

Due to the amount of United Center ice secured, there will be a limit of 6 teams at each level. This event is for 8U only (7 and 8 year olds) and teams that are registered with AHAI/USA hockey. Teams can register by sending an email to [email protected]. Include in that email the club name, team name, level at which team currently plays, a contact person and their name and email. Clearly indicate if the team is in a league and what level they play at in that league. READ MORE>>

ADM Principles Nurturing Decades of Rochester Talent

 By Mike Scandura, USA Hockey

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, a group of coaches introduced a new philosophy meant to improve player development for the kids in the Rochester (Minnesota) Youth Hockey Association.

So when USA Hockey promoted a similar philosophy decades later in the American Development Model, the RYHA jumped on board.

"The focus is on skill development through fundamentals and small-area games," said RYHA Traveling Unit Director Scott Schneider. "This has been the focus of RYHA for decades, and we're glad to see the ADM focus has gone nationwide." READ MORE>>

ADM & Girls Hockey: Amidon on the ADM and Letting Kids be Kids

By Tom Robinson, USA Hockey

Following a distinguished career as a player for St. Lawrence University and the United States Women's National Team, and then nine seasons behind the bench at Bowdoin College, Michele Amidon joined USA Hockey in 2006 as its first director of women's hockey.

After overseeing the women's program through several major tournaments, including the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Amidon took on a new role as an ADM regional manager in August 2010. Ever since Amidon has been providing local youth hockey associations with a blueprint for optimal athlete development, while also jumping on the ice to conduct clinics and help groom the next generation of American hockey talent. THE ADM:
IT'S ABOUT PLAYING TIME TOO!
MY COACH S@&KS! DOES HE REALLY?

Princeton University men's hockey coach Guy Gadowsky offers some important tips for coaching hockey in this video. Guy says it's essential that youth hockey coaches allow young players to play games during practice and learn to enjoy the game of hockey.

Want to be the best player you can be? Stop blaming your coach and hold yourself accountable.

PRACTICE PLANS FOR DRYLAND
"Soft Touch"

In this youth hockey video, coach Guy Gadowsky demonstrates one of our favorite youth hockey drills for mite and squirt players. This hockey drill is great for working on stick handling while skating, and also for learning to keep the head up while skating.

USA Hockey provides an abundance of material to help coaches design efficient and fun dryland training for the 8U age group. We will highlight some of those exercises here each month.

Ask your coaching coordinator or hockey director where you can get the dryland deck of cards, or contact AHAI's Coach- in- Chief.
