It Is Just A Game
By Steven Drews, IHOA President

As parents, coaches, officials and players all come together to play the game we all love and expect the most from each other; some of us struggle to hold back or feel we have the right to express ourselves in ways that are detrimental to the game. After all we are human in nature, and we all see things in a different way when it comes to our loved ones. Let's face it, the amount of experience or knowledge of the game we feel we may have may not be the same as the person next to us. What we believe to be a rule may have been a rule before, but is no longer. In the past USA Hockey has made rule changes every two years, but as of last season they have elected to make rule changes every four years.

Video: From Child's View, Adults Find Full-Ice No Fun
By USA Hockey

Ever wonder how a full-sized sheet of ice looks through a child's eyes? USA Hockey put adult players on a hockey rink scaled to simulate what a child experiences when they play full-ice hockey. The results weren't pretty, but they were captured in a new video released last week. Ken Martel, technical director of USA Hockey's American Development Model took it all in and sat down for the following Q-and-A on the topic.

Q: What was the inspiration for building the up-scaled hockey rink at the Pond Hockey Championships this year?

Martel: As adults, it's hard to imagine or remember what it was really like trying to play the game on a full-sized ice sheet. And for as much as we try to explain the benefits of cross-ice hockey for skill development and fun among young players, there's nothing that conveys that message better than having adults actually experience the challenges of this up-scaled full-ice environment for themselves. So that was our inspiration - and it says something that we needed an eight-acre lake to do it.

Illinois Youth Participate in Auxiliary Skate at Soldier Field
By Michael Durkin

A total of 22 kids, ages 9-12 years old, participated in auxiliary pond activities on Saturday, March 1, before and during intermissions of the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series Game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Michael Durkin and Jim Clare of AHAI , Bob Mancini and Kevin Erlenbach from USA Hockey and Annie Camins, with her staff Matt Brooks, Stephanie Dubin, Sean McMahon and Louis Bisceglie, provided on-ice assistance and instruction.

The children were divided into two teams wearing Blackhawks and Penguins uniforms and played 2 on 2 and 3 on 3 games for two hours before the National Anthem.  They also had the opportunity to skate in between periods. Kevin Ackerman from the Hornets Youth Sled team also participated.  Special thanks to Annie Camins from the Chicago Blackhawks and the NHL for a great event.
