So, you got motivated, de-cluttered this spring, and are thinking of having a garage sale. Good job! Garage sales are a great way to get rid of stuff you don't need, make a little money and have some fun.

Making your garage sale a success
Here are some tips to make your garage sale a success.
  1. Plan to have your garage sale on Friday and Saturday, rather than Saturday and Sunday.  You'll find you get more business on a Friday than a Sunday.
  2. Be clear on when it starts and if possible don't open your garage doors until you want customers.  Otherwise you'll get people wandering around before you are ready.
  3. Group like things together to make it easier for customers to find things.... clothes, tools, kitchen, decorations, etc.   Make easy to read signs for each category.
  4. If you have a lot of a particular item, consider pricing them all the same, and writing the price on your category sign. It will cut down on the time you spend pricing.
  5. Craigslist is a great place to advertise for free.  I would suggest posting each morning of the garage sale.  You can also attach pictures.
  6. You can also advertise for free online with the local newspaper.  You'll want to do that several days in advance of the sale.
  7. Make clear, easy to read posters directing people to your garage sale. Use large dark arrows pointing to your house, and make sure your address is clear.  Put them up the night before.  (Make sure you take them down when you are done!)
  8. If you aren't going to have someone sitting at a cashier table at all times, get a money belt and keep it on you.  Make sure you have change to start out with.
  9. Remember your objective - get rid of stuff!  People at garage sales will always negotiate price.  Don't worry how much you paid for it, because it's irrelevant now.
