Greetings!

Happy Pay Your Bills Week!   Yep - the 3rd week in February is National Pay Your Bills Week and a good time to think about your bill paying process.

Never make a late payment again
Have you ever missed a bill and ended up paying a late fee?  Talk about throwing money away!  Here's a few tips to make sure you get your bills paid on time.
  1. Have only one place for all bills that come in the mail.  Identify one and only one place for bills. It might be a basket, bin, letter tray or folder. It doesn't matter what is as much as there is only one place to put all bills.  They key is that you use it to always hold your bills, and nothing else.  And that you don't hide it away where you forgot about it!
  2. Pay your bills the same time every week.    Set aside the same time every week (Saturday morning, for example) to review the bills and pay those that are due.  If you review weekly, you won't miss a bill that is due.
  3. Set up automatic payments wherever possible.  Many recurring bills can be set up to be paid automatically such as your cable, phone, heating and electric bills.   Make your life easier and set up as many payments as possible to happen automatically.  When you get the statement notification, just record the amount in your checkbook register.
  4. If you've set up for online statements, don't ignore the notification email.   It's great to help the environment by receiving electronic instead of paper statements.  But, not so great when the email notification gets buried in your email, and you miss it. My suggestion is to review your statement and pay your bill as soon as you get the email.  Even if it isn't due for several weeks, you should be able to set the payment date for a few days before it's due.
  5. Record all your checks in your check register and balance your checkbook every month to make sure you aren't overdrawing on your account.
What better time to get your bills in order than the last cold weekend of this season?   (Hopefully!)
