The Fugue
|
Featuring professional dancers of the highest caliber, the Chamber Dance Company presents rarely seen modern dance works of historic and artistic significance. The 2013 concert, In Gender explores the role of gender in dance and the constantly changing attitudes about who dances and why. Choreographers and dances highlighted this year include Doris Humphrey's, The Shakers (premiere 1931), and Air for the G String (1928), Twyla Tharp's The Fugue (1970), Brazilian Duets (1998) by Zvi Gotheiner, and Posession Quartet (1994), by Doug Varone inspired by A.S. Byatt's book and performed to a riveting score by Phillip Glass.
Thirty minutes prior to curtain, all ticket holders are welcome to a pre-performance lecture about these historical dances and iconic choreographers in the Meany lobby.

UWtv to air Chamber Dance Series
Tuesdays & Wednesdays through October 9th
Best of Chamber Dance Company
What's old is new again! In 2001, UWTV aired The Best of Chamber Dance, featuring outstanding performances by University of Washington's Chamber Dance Company. In honor of CDC's ongoing performance series, UWTV is bringing back the program for air including the newest series, completed this past spring. Audiences can also view past CDC performances through an archival DVD collection in the Odegaard Library's Media Center. The CDC, comprised of graduate students with a minimum of eight years of professional dance experience, specializes in performing the works of modern dance history's great choreographers. Throughout the years, CDC has presented dances of Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Mark Morris and Bill T. Jones plus many more.

"I will always miss dancing at the leveI I was at before the injury," says Anna Zemke, "but I'm lucky in all that I still can do in dance." Photo by Isaiah Brookshire. |
It only took a second. A lift gone wrong in a dance rehearsal. When Anna Zemke fell from that lift, shattering multiple bones in her foot, her future was forever altered. She just didn't know it yet.

Betsy Cooper, the Dance Program's leader for more than ten years, has been named the Divisional Dean for the Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Betsy presided over the department during a tumultuous period of reduced support combined with a need to serve more students. She was tireless in her efforts to find outside funding to support artistic residencies for students and also additional support for faculty.
Although her full-time presence will be missed, Betsy will continue to teach ballet technique, Early Dance History and other courses for both graduate and undergraduate students. The Dance Program is thrilled to have such a wonderful friend of the Arts (and of Dance) in the Dean's office. Congratulations Betsy!
Jennifer Salk, associate professor has been chosen to step into Betsy's shoes beginning September 1. Jennifer is familiar to students through her classes in modern technique, composition, teaching methods and creative process. While her new role as director will require her to pull back from some of her current responsibilities, there is no doubt she will tackle the administrative duties of the Dance Program with creativity and gusto. Join us in welcoming Jennifer to her new position!
