Hall County Sheriff hosted 9/11 Ceremony Honoring First Responders and Law Enforcement Professionals

Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch was delighted to have the opportunity to put a spotlight on the hard work and diligent efforts performed daily by colleagues and family in the public safety profession at his annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony. The ceremony was held at The Venue, on the campus of Blackshear Place Church in Flowery Branch. After an invocation by Senior Pastor, Jeff Crook, a soothing violin solo wowed the crowd from young virtuoso Alex Foster. The Hall County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard gracefully presented our nation's colors, as Deputy Jonathan Jackson eloquently sang the National Anthem. Decatur County Sheriff, Wiley Griffin (current President of the Georgia Sheriff's Association), made opening remarks at our 9/11 ceremony. Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety Director Harris Blackwood reflected on the moments leading up to the fateful terrorist attacks which bound us all to this crucial era for our country. He posed the question "Where were you on that fateful day?"

To conclude, Keynote Speaker Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle reminded us all that we have come a long way from the devastating terrorists acts on 9/11/01. There were sacrifices made and a price was paid so that we may we never forget how precious our freedom is today!

Human Approach saves a life...

Gail Lane, E-911

On Saturday, September 20th, 2014 at 07:19pm Barbara Miller took a call from a Crisis Intervention line based out of another state,  the only information Barbara was given was the phone number of a phone registered in Hall County and that the caller had told them he was going to commit suicide by hanging himself.

At 07:21pm, Barbara called the number back, only to receive a voice mail.  Barbara left a message advising who she was and asked that someone call her back.

At 19:27pm, the victim called back and Barbara answered the phone.  During the conversation, using techniques she has learned over the years, was able to get the caller to reveal his name, location and convinced him to open the door in order to receive whatever help the authorities could offer.   As soon as Barbara obtained the location of the caller, another member of the shift called the authorities in that area, gave them the information and officers were immediately dispatched to that location.

Barbara's human approach and years of experience were the key in handling this emotional caller and saving his life.

Though Millie Perez is not an employee of the Tax Commissioner's Office, she has continually gone above and beyond in her pursuit of excellence in customer service in coordination with our office. Not only is she willing to direct our taxpayers to the appropriate office or floor, she has also provided other outstanding assistance to all in need.

In fact, on a hot and muggy Tuesday morning in September, Millie was seen assisting a disabled veteran in a wheel chair. Not only did she push this veteran up the hill to his car, she also attached his newly purchased tag for him. Millie was in heels and a skirt!! This is definitely above and beyond.

Millie is not an employee of Hall County Government, but she is a vital member of the Hall County team. She goes above and beyond in all aspects of her role her in the government building.

We, at the Tax Commissioner's office, would like to extend our thanks to Millie. Your helpfulness has not gone unnoticed to us or our customers. Thank you for all that you do!

Child Safety Seat Event

We partnered up with our local public safety family at Hall County Fire Services, Gainesville Police Department, Georgia State Patrol and the Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County for National Child Passenger Safety Week. At that time, we conducted a handful of child seat check events around the county. The goal: We hope to see you buckling every passenger, in every seat, everywhere you go!

Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle paid special recognition to Hall County Fire Services injured firefighters: Will Griffin, TJ Elliott and Stephen Jackson for their determination and dedication in the line of duty during our 9/11 ceremony. These three gentlemen were in a bucket on top of a ladder that was extended from their fire truck during a training exercise. A mechanical failure took place and the ladder dropped approximately 20 feet, coming to a sudden stop, injuring the firemen. It was a real treat to be able to see them receive this very deserving recognition in such a special way.

Focusing on Domestic Violence is a Lunch & Lesson session being held on Thursday, October 2.   Did you know that 1 in 4 women will experience abuse by an intimate partner?  It's an alarming statistic - 25% of all women.  We've seen the recent spotlight on sports figures who have physically abused their partners.  October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.  In conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness month, Human Resources is proud to present a Lunch & Learn session focusing on the issue of domestic violence and partner abuse.  How can we help victims?  How does partner abuse come into play in the workplace?  At this Lunch & Learn session, we welcome three dynamic speakers.  Abigail Hosford Cutchshaw is the daughter of the late Dr. Michael Hosford, beloved Gainesville pediatrician.  Abigail is a published author, and a domestic violence survivor.  She shares her compelling journey from abuse victim to survivor in her book, Finding Hope - The Journey of a Battered Wife.  Abigail speaks publically to various civic groups and schools, sharing her story of survival.  She is a gifted speaker.  You will not want to miss her!  Stephanie Woodard is the Solicitor General for the Ninth District Northeastern Judicial Circuit.  Ms. Woodard is an exciting speaker who will be speaking on the dynamics of partner abuse, why victims stay in abusive relationships, and how friends and family can  help abuse victims.   Jessica Butler is the Executive Director of Gateway Domestic Violence Center, in Gainesville.  Ms. Butler will share beneficial information regarding the impact partner abuse has in the workplace.  She will speak on how the abuse victim may interact in the workplace with co-workers and customers, how abuse affects job performance, recognizing signs of abuse, and  how co-workers and supervisors can help an abuse victim.  Bring your brown bag lunch and join us at noon on Thursday, October 2, at the Hall County Government Center for this important and very interesting session.  Human Resources will provide dessert!

Customer Service for Fire and Safety Personnel will be offered on Thursday, October 9.  This class will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Fire Services Training Center.  This class is open to all Fire and EMS personnel and will focus on the sometimes difficult task of providing excellent customer service in an emergency or crisis situation.  Focus will be on serving not only the patient, but emotional family members and bystanders as well.  If you are a Fire/EMS employee who needs continuing  training, this is the class for you!

Customer Service in a Government Organization will be offered Wednesday, October 29.  This class will be held from 9:00 - Noon in the HR Training Room, located on the second floor of the HCGC.  Participants in this class will learn to refine and develop key customer service skills for serving the tax payer/citizen.  Topics of discussion will include the unique culture of working in public service, expectations of the tax payer, serving internal customers, key customer skills, handling angry customers, and developing a workplace that promotes and encourages customer service values.  Supervisory staff as well as non-supervisory staff are encouraged to attend this program.  Customer Service is a required training class for all newly hired employees.

Harassment in the Workplace will be offered Wednesday, November 5.  This class will be held from 9:00 - 11:00 in the HR Training Room, located on the second floor of the HCGC.  Participants in this class will learn to recognize harassing behaviors in the workplace.  Topics of discussion will include various types of harassment, hostile work environment, the impact harassment has on the victim and the employer, and the laws preventing harassment.  Participants will also discuss Hall County's policies regarding harassment in the workplace.  Supervisory staff as well as non-supervisory staff are encouraged to attend this program.  Harassment in the Workplace is a required training class for all newly hired employees.

Supervisory Skills will be offered on Wednesday, November 12.  This is a full day class, being held 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., in the HR Training Room, located on the second floor of the HCGC.   This is a  one day workshop for those employees who supervise or manage other staff members.  This class is especially beneficial for new supervisors.  The class will provide information on the roles & responsibilities of a manager, as well as how to motivate and develop employees.  The class includes videos and workbooks.

Seating is limited in all classes, and registration is required for each class.  For additional information, or to register to attend a training class, please contact Becky Ruffner in Human Resources via email at bruffner@hallcounty.org,  or by phone at 770-297-5500.

Defensive Driving classes will be taught by Michelle Hopkins, Loss Control Specialist.  All county employees who drive a county car are required to attend a defensive driving class.  For more information on the Defensive Driving classes, please contact Michelle.  The classes are offered on the following dates:

Thursday October 9th  8:30 - 4:30  at the Emergency Services Complex (470 Crescent Drive Gainesville)

Thursday October 23rd  8:30 - 4:30  at the Fire Training Center (Allen Creek Road)

Tuesday October 28th  8:30 - 4:30  at the Fire Training Center (Allen Creek Road)

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.  Approximately 1 in 4 women will experience abuse by a partner at some point in their lives.  Although both men and women can be abuse victims, approximately 85% of partner abuse is committed by men against women.  Approximately 15.5 million children in the United States witnessed domestic violence at least once in the past year.  From 2003 through 2012, at least 1,200 Georgia citizens lost their lives due to domestic violence. Georgia was recently ranked 12th in the nation for its rate of men killing women. In 18% of the cases studied through Georgia's Domestic Violence Fatality Review Project, children witnessed the domestic violence killing. The statistics are alarming.  In recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness month in October, Human Resources is proud to present a Lunch & Learn session focusing on the issue of domestic violence and partner abuse. For more information, or to register to attend the Lunch and Learn, please contact Becky Ruffner in Human Resources.
