Hall County Government invites residents to enjoy spectacular fireworks on July 4 at Laurel Park, benefitting the American Legion Paul E. Bolding Post 7.  Hall County Parks and Leisure, Sheriff's Office, Fire Services, Public Works, Public Safety and the Correctional Institution donate services each year to support this longstanding local tradition.

Laurel Park is located at 3100 Old Cleveland Hwy, Gainesville. Gates will open at 9 a.m. for visitors to enjoy the sports facilities, playground, spray ground, dog park and views of Lake Lanier. A spectacular fireworks display, provided by Hall County Government, begins at dusk. Parking is $5 per car. Snow cones, hot dogs and other concessions will be sold by North Georgia Boy Scouts. Other activities include an arts and crafts show as well as fun rides for the kids.

Boat ramps at Laurel Park will be closed July 4 to make more room for event parking, but boaters are invited to launch at Clarks Bridge Park or Little River Park boat ramps nearby and watch the fireworks from the water.
Congratulations!!

10th Annual Vietnam Veterans of America Car Show
HCSO

Cars from the past 100 years were on display alongside the Hall County Sheriff's Office and other public safety personnel, in helping to raise money for scholarships awarded by the Vietnam Veterans of America.

The tenth annual car show was held at Lakewood Baptist Church in Gainesville, this June. It was sponsored by the local Vietnam Veterans Chapter (#772). All the money raised in the show will go to the Vietnam Veterans of America's scholarship fund. Overall, the organization has given out over $30,000 in scholarships to family members of Vietnam veterans.

The organization also provides support for recent war veterans and helps run Operation Patriots Call, a support network for soldiers' families before, during and after deployments. Operation Patriots Call has been instrumental in helping members of Gainesville's National Guard unit Charlie Company, many of whom recently returned from Afghanistan. The veterans group also provides a color guard at area high schools and has installed several monuments at area parks.

Receiving some reports of a scam that originated on or before 2009 through email inboxes across the country... It began as a message from a fictitious soldier in Iraq pleading for assistance, "My name is Capt. J Anthony and I am an American soldier serving in the Military of the 1st Armored Division in Iraq. As you know, we are being attacked by insurgents everyday and car bombings..."

Once the hook is set, the online scammer follows with a request relating to money that had been found in their quest for justice against insurgents. The scammer states that he wants to "move this money to a reputable/sincere person for investment purposes and safe keeping in United States. This is the reason for contacting you."

With his bait afloat, the scammer waits patiently for a phish to bite: "When you receive this letter, kindly send me an e-mail signifying your interest including your most confidential telephone numbers and your full mailing address, Picture and Identification card, I will also send my to you."

The scammer then concludes with: "This is 100% risk-free". If you "swallow that line" and respond with your personal identity information, as requested, you are going to be reeled into his net of deceit!

Be "the one that got away"! Don't give up your personal information to anyone who solicits you via email. Make sure that you only do business with reputable sources that can be trusted and verified through the Better Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.org/atlanta/).

Do not respond to suspicious and unsolicited email. If you think you may be looking at a scam or something that promises an unbelievably large payoff, your instinct is probably right. Cyber criminals have become quite savvy in their attempts to lure people into clicking onto links or opening phony email attachments, as well. When the "bait" goes stale, they throw it out and try new material... Or, move to another "phishing hole".

If you believe that you have fallen victim to a similar scam, or have some email that appears suspicious in nature, contact our Crime Prevention and Community Service Unit at (770)531-6900.

Remember to use common sense on Independence Day...

The Hall County Fire Marshal's Office is reminding the public to leave the fireworks to the "pros" this Independence Day. Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle says, "There will be plenty of opportunities to watch professional shows instead of putting children and others at risk with personal fireworks."

Some fireworks are legal in Georgia, primarily those that emit sparkles and not the aerial type nor the exploding type commonly known as fire crackers. If you have to go to another state to buy them, that's a pretty good indication that they are illegal in Georgia. Even though we do not recommend citizens use personal "legal" fireworks at all, we understand that a lot of people will still use them, so we encourage everyone to be careful and abide by these common safety tips:

Fireworks Safety Tips...

  • Use fireworks outdoors only.
  • Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
  • Always have water handy (a hose or bucket) or a fire extinguisher.
  • Shoot the fireworks on sturdy level ground (asphalt or concrete is best)
  • Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them.
  • Never re-light a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter, and the shooter should wear safety glasses.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a "designated shooter."
  • Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type. Sparklers can burn in the excess of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Do not ever use homemade fireworks made of illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.
  • NEVER discard fireworks in the trash - soak them in a bucket of water first!

A domestic call came into the 9-1-1 Center Thursday, June 26th, 2014 around 18:00hrs.  It became apparent during the call, the suspect had possibly kidnapped one victim in another county and was now on the way to Gainesville.  The kidnapper was making threats to include killing the kidnapped victim and one (1) other person.   Using the cell phone numbers obtained during the original call,  the Supervisor, Kathy Brogan and the SCO (Senior Communication Officer) Amanda Sneed, contacted the cell phone service provider for the phone numbers given as the number for the victim and the suspect and asked they start pinging these numbers to try and determine their location.  The cell phone service provider was successful in pinging the suspects phone and provided a location.  At the Shift Supervisor and SCO's request the cell phone service provider continued to ping the suspects cell phone resulting the in the suspect being tracked to another county and located. There was a collaborative effort between all agencies, which ultimately ended in the safe recover of the victim and the suspect taken into custody.

Teamwork is a vital part of our job which the members of C Shift exemplified in their roll of the apprehension of the suspect and the safe return of the victim and ensured the suspect never reached the other parties who were threatened.  If you asked any member of this department, they would all tell you this is all in a day's work for us.

Sterling Strickland wasn't in a very good mood when he and his family went to eat at a restaurant in Gainesville about a month ago.

As a coach for his daughter's softball team, he was still reeling from the loss of the game that afternoon.

But then a man sitting in a booth nearby began to choke. And Strickland's training as a firefighter and paramedic kicked in.

"I was just sort of immediately thrust into it, had no prep time," Strickland said. "I got him out of the booth, got him on the ground, treated him, got the food and stuff out of his mouth. Then he started into the seizure and I let that run its course. There's not much I can do for that. Then he started coming around. About the time the ambulance got (to) him, he was much better."

Right-place-right-time situations like this don't happen often. It was a first for Strickland.

Strickland, 44, is a firefighter-paramedic for Hall County Fire Services. He works at Station No. 2 in Clermont and has for most of his 22-year career. Strickland, along with many of the other firefighters and paramedics at the station, grew up in the small North Hall community.

Firefighters having a lifelong connection to the community they serve helps many patients feel more comfortable when they're in emergency situations, Strickland said.

Public Folders Reminder

In Outlook, under Public Folders, we have a HR folder.  The purpose of this folder is to use this as a repository for common forms that Managers need access to on a regular basis.  It will also serve as a place to find the most current version of the form so that we can replace it as the forms are updated without having to send the forms out by email and then hope people are using the most current version.  This is different from storing forms on the county website because these forms aren't ones that employees use on a regular basis, if ever.

If you have a form that you think would be good to add to this folder, please contact Bill Moats at bmoats@hallcounty.org

In case you need a refresher on how to get to Public Folders, there is a folder icon in Outlook (look at the bottom of the picture).
