A.D.V.A.N.C.E. GRADUATION
Hall County Sheriff's Office

The Hall County Sheriff's Office spent the last couple of weeks in December 2013 honoring A.D.V.A.N.C.E. graduates across the County. Sheriff Gerald Couch and Major John Latty along with School Resource Officers, administrators, teachers, students and their family members have been in attendance to witness hundreds of our community's stellar fifth graders complete the program in grand fashion!

A.D.V.A.N.C.E. offers proactive strategies to enhance several protective factors for young people. Sheriff Couch dedicates five Hall County Sheriff's Deputies to facilitate the A.D.V.A.N.C.E. (Avoiding Drugs, Violence, and Negative Choices Early) program to our fifth graders... at our TWENTY elementary schools throughout the County.

The 10-week program has been used as a template for the Georgia Sheriff's Association C.H.A.M.P.S. education model. Strategies include emphasis on development of social competence, conflict resolution, and offering positive alternatives to drugs, violence, cyber-bullying, and gangs. In addition, the program provides informational lessons on personal safety, stranger-danger, internet safety, and water safety through the curriculum. Since 2004, the ADVANCE program has reached over 20,000 children!

Sheriff Gerald Couch touts the effectiveness of the A.D.V.A.N.C.E. program, "We continue to reach our young people during a defining era in their early childhood. Every one of us has had at least one person, in our lives, who has had an overwhelming impact on molding our future... For better, or worse. Poor decision-making, early on, can yield self-destructive behavior in adulthood. The end result has occasionally culminated in jail time, years of probation and drug addiction for those who have no other way to cope with their plight. Our goal in utilizing the A.D.V.A.N.C.E. program is to continue assisting our youth with the favorable development of their own assessment skills. Our A.D.V.A.N.C.E. Unit aims to accomplish this by introducing fifth graders to a wide array of positive choices and healthy influences derived through the supportive cache of community resources available to the Hall County Sheriff's Office."

At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, our A.D.V.A.N.C.E. Unit will open the doors to their annual summer camp. The camp is provided to more than 200 young people each year, free of charge. To date, over 3000 children have enjoyed a productive summer at A.D.V.A.N.C.E. Camp, while reinforcing the positive values learned earlier during the school year. We relish the fact that the number continues to grow, annually!

Hall County Hires Deputy Fire Chief

Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell announced Tuesday that he has hired Jeff Hood as Hall County Fire Services' new Deputy Fire Chief.

Hood began his career with Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services in 1978 and remained with that department until his retirement in 2013.  During that time, Hood became state-certified as a firefighter, paramedic, Level II Paramedic instructor and Georgia-certified Emergency Manager.  He was also named Clayton County's Fire Chief and Emergency Management Agency Director in 2011. In addition, Hood was appointed by the State Homeland Security Director to represent the Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs on the State Homeland Security Task Force in 2013.

"We are extremely fortunate to find someone with Jeff's experience and knowledge to fill this position," Kimbrell said.  "He has functioned in this capacity before and will be able to come in and hit the ground running."

As Deputy Fire Chief, Hood will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the department, including managing the department's emergency vehicle fleet and its administrative functions.

"Jeff will fill a much-needed role in the department," Kimbrell said.  "We feel confident that his presence will enhance the level of public safety for the citizens of Hall County."

Hood and his wife Suzanne reside in Hall County.  They have two grown sons and three grandchildren.

"I'm excited to be able to serve the community in which I live," Hood said.  "There is no career more rewarding than one in fire services, and I'm honored to be able to continue serving in this role."

Hood began his new duties on Jan. 27.

Coffee with a Cop

On January 17th, deputies from the Hall County Sheriff's Office invited citizens to join us for Coffee with a Cop at the Longstreet Caf (#2) on Pearl Nix Parkway. The entire community was asked to come together with us in an informal, neutral space to talk about issues in your neighborhood, foster relationships with our deputies, and enjoy a warm cup of coffee.

The event began at 7:00 AM, on the 17th, providing a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the daily operations of your Hall County Sheriff's Office. For the most part, whenever citizens contact law enforcement, we are dealing with emergencies, or highly emotional situations. Those occasions are not always the most effective times to build community connections. Additionally, some community members may feel that deputies are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop attempts to break down the existing barriers and allow for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

"We hope that our community will feel comfortable in asking questions, bringing concerns, or simply getting to know our deputies," said Sheriff Gerald Couch. "These types of interactions are the very foundation of strong community partnerships."

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments, sheriff's offices, and state police forces strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between law enforcement and community members "one cup of coffee at a time". See you at the next!

New South Precinct
Hall county Sheriff's Office

The Hall County Sheriff's Office has purchased a building that will serve as the agency's South Hall headquarters, as well as the first full-service Sheriff's Office complex south of Gainesville.

The approximately 10,000-square-foot brick structure is located at 7345 Cody Drive in Braselton. It sits on more than two (2) acres of land. The facility, which previously served as a daycare, is near the intersections of Friendship, Spout Springs and Thompson Mill Roads. It is also located near the new Lanier Islands Parkway.

"This provides a strategically placed law enforcement presence, allowing officers to make a timely response in crucial, emergency situations," said Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch.

The South Hall headquarters will serve as the operational center for more than 40 employees, including: supervisors, patrol officers, investigators, public information officers and administrative staff. It will be open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The additional location will provide citizens in South Hall with ready access to many of the same services that are presently available at the agency's main office in Gainesville. Those services include: meeting with deputies, filing incident & accident reports and obtaining copies of reports. However, it will NOT include registering sex offenders and fingerprinting services for firearms permits.

The new facility was originally listed for $1.2 million and was purchased for $700,000 using SPLOST VI funds. Remodeling of the building will be paid for by impact fees.

"The new South Hall headquarters is a wise investment in the South Hall community, which has a large and growing population," Couch said. "We are looking forward to providing better service to the citizens of South Hall, and we are confident that this facility will continue to meet the needs of this area for years to come."

Remodeling of the building should be completed and open for use by July 2014.
