CENTENNIAL CORNER:  LEGACY GIFTS

In honor of our Centennial year, the Campus Club Board has voted unanimously to give from the Campus Club budget a legacy gift of $3,000 each to the Duke Gardens, where so many of us volunteer, and to the Duke Library, already a partner with Campus Club for the student study breaks.  The goal of the legacy gifts, besides contributing to worthy causes, is to give maximum exposure on campus to Campus Club as a part of the Campus Club Centennial.

The Gardens will use the $3,000 we donate as seed money for the renovation of the wisteria pergola at the top of the Terrace Gardens.  The wisteria has become embedded in the steel support structure, not blooming well for three years (see picture attached).  The project will entail cutting back the wisteria, sandblasting the pergola and repainting it, and then retraining the wisteria onto the pergola.  Bill LeFevre, director of the Gardens, will approach Campus Club members who are also donors to the Gardens to see if they would like to contribute individually to the project to make it entirely a Campus Club undertaking.   A plaque on the pergola will indicate that the project is donated in honor of the Campus Club Centennial.

The Duke Library will use the $3,000 we donate to create an additional student art wall in the main part of Perkins library just before the walkway between Perkins and Bostock on the main floor.  There is already one student art exhibit wall; this new one will be an additional wall with a plaque indicating our sponsorship.  The money will be used for frames, wiring, and other items needed for mounting exhibits. The wall will not only be used for student art, but can also be used for other Duke-related exhibits.

The Board believes that these will both be lasting legacies, additionally giving Campus Club positive exposure within the Duke community.

Wine and Dine
Did you know that North Carolina has grown wine for about 400 years?    Sir Walter Raleigh and his crew discovered the Mother vine, the oldest known cultivated grapevine in the New World.  Now centuries later we can taste the fruits of the vines that have descended from this early discovery.  Tour the Vineyards of Swan Creek in the Yadkin River Valley with other Campus Club members on Friday, November 22, 2013.

We'll have lunch and learn about the wine industry of North Carolina as it is today.  Let's keep the story alive - join us on the bus for fun, fellowship and relaxation.    It will be fun, educational, and the cost is $85 per person. Please send your check to Sarah Woodard, 2009 Woodrow Street, Durham, NC 27705 as soon as possible to secure your seat on the bus!

 10-10-10-10 Garden Time

October 10 at 10 a.m., the Garden Tours group will visit the private gardens of Montrose in Hillsborough.  The admission price is $10.  Don't know much about Montrose?  This historic garden, which now holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, has been featured in Southern Living and the New York Times, and is accessible only by appointment.

This nationally known garden got its start in the 19th century at the hands and hearts of William Graham, North Carolina governor, senator, and secretary of the Navy, and his wife, Susan, along with Thomas Paxton, who was the landscape gardener for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Now Nancy Goodwin and her husband, Craufurd, a Duke professor, own the 61-acre garden area of woodlands, specimen trees planted by the Grahams, rock gardens, and several 19th century outbuildings.  As a preservation project of the Garden Conservancy, Montrose has been selected as one of less than 20 of America's select gardens currently in that unique program designed to preserve gardens with historical and horticultural significance.

Want to visit this garden and be a part of Garden Tours?  Contact Malissa Kilpatrick at russandmalissa@gmail.com

A Note from the Membership VP

Our Centennial Year of celebration is a great time for all of us to entice our friends, colleagues, and new acquaintances to join Campus Club.  Our full calendar of activities is even more special than usual.  Whether it is our fall luncheon with Judy Woodruff as our special speaker, the tour of North Carolina wineries, or the Gala at the Washington Duke in the spring we have many ways to show off our club.  Our wonderful Campus Club community continues to remain strong and vibrant because of its creative and thoughtful members. Let's gather even more into our fold.

I hope to see you at many events this year.
