An evening of learning, poetry, prayer and music in commemoration of Yom Hashoah-Holocaust Memorial Day. The holocaust period produced a large body of responsa literature, Yiddish poetry and music. This program will share many of these voices.
Rabbi Ephraim Oshry,z"l was the spiritual leader of the Kovno ghetto during the war years and was subsequently imprisoned in a concentration camp near Kovno. Throughout this period, Rabbi Oshry received many ethical questions concerning the conduct of Jewish life under those extraordinary circumstances. He wrote down the questions and his answers on small bits of paper and buried them in the ground in the concentration camp. Sometime after the war he retrieved his writings and over time published five volumes of responsa literature pertaining to this period. Some of this heartrending literature will be explored, shedding more light on the struggles of individuals during that time.
During these years, Jewish composers also produced many works of music. Musicians Anne Legene and Larry Wallach will share music from this period for piano and cello. Yiddish poetry from the period will also be shared as well as niggunim (wordless melodies) and memorial prayers. All are invited to attend.
