Spiritual Views on 
Death and the After-life

 

This forum will present the spiritual beliefs and rituals related to the process of dying, death and the after-life as understood by many of our world religions. 

Presenters will include a panel of local clergy from the Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Christian Community, Muslim and Buddhist faith traditions. 

 

Topics will include: customs surrounding care for the deceased; the journey of the soul after death; the relationship between the living and the dead; and what these traditions teach regarding preparation for this ultimate transition.

A Midrashic and Musical Journey into Torah

 

Lisa and Arthur

Join Maggid Arthur Strimling and Cantor Lisa B. Segal as they lead us on a midrashic and musical journey through the Torah portion of Terumah, God's very specific and mystifying instructions for the design of sacred space. In this portion God tells Moses: "Let them make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them." Our guest presenters will illuminate this vision through teaching, discussion, singing and play.

Arthur Strimling is a contemporary maggid, carrying on the great Jewish tradition of transmitting and reinventing our wisdom through agadah/stories.   He has presented and taught at the Public Theater, the Jewish Museum, Symphony Space, HUC, AJR, JTS, CAJE, and at congregations, JCCs and theaters nationwide. Arthur is also the Founding Artistic Director of Roots&Branches Theater and author of Roots&Branches: Creating Intergenerational Theater. Most recently, he co-edited and contributed to Mitzvah Stories: Seeds for Inspiration and Learning. Arthur is Maggid ha Makom (Storyteller in Residence) at Congregation Kolot Chayeinu in Brooklyn where he lives with his beloved, Cantor Lisa B. Segal.

 

Cantor Lisa B. Segal serves Congregation Kolot Chayeinu in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where she was a founding member. She is the Director of Cantorial Studies at the Academy for Jewish Religion (AJR) where she received her ordination. Cantor Segal has performed with a range of notable and innovative Jewish musicians and has sung with many cantors and choirs. Cantor Segal performs with her husband, Maggid/Midrashist and Performer Arthur Strimling, at synagogues and venues across the country.

Fundamentals of Jewish Mysticism
 Taught by Rabba Kaya Stern-Kaufman
Adin Steinsaltz is widely recognized as the greatest Jewish scholar of our generation.Using his book as our guide, we will delve more deeply into the fundamental concepts that form the basis for an understanding of Jewish mystical thought. Topics to be explored include: the Four Worlds, Sephirotic System, Angels, the Soul, Torah and Teshuvah.
Participants will need to acquire a copy of the book prior to the first class.
