April 2013

Dear CIS Friend,
Welcome to another edition of the CIS South Central Texas Newsletter. In this issue you will find how we've been keeping busy as well as what future events we have planned and articles on some of our incredible programs and staff. We wish you a very Happy Spring and please know how grateful we are for your continued support.
Rock 'n Roll for Kids 2013
We've put up our guitars and our platform shoes and another Rock 'n Roll for Kids is behind us...what a Rock 'n Roll it was! Paddles were raised, delicious food was enjoyed and records were broken (and not just the vinyl ones). We are extremelyproud to announce that this year we had record-breaking attendance, record-breaking number of Silent Auction items, and our favorite...RECORD-SHATTERING GREAT LEGS CONTEST!

We couldn't have done this with out the support and dedication of our sponsors.

Clear Spring Elementary
It has been a busy spring at Communities in Schools at Clear Spring Elementary. Here is just a taste of what has been happening there.

The 5th Grade Girls Leadership group took a trip to the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center to work on teambuilding, face their fears, and show their strengths!  Each girl had the opportunity to climb the 40 foot climbing tower and then soar through the air on the screamer.
Amelia Acosta on her way to the top!
CIS hosted Health and Fitness Day on Monday, March 25th. 2nd-5th grade students participated in gymnastics and crossfit during their specials time. The students learned about strength, endurance, coordination, and balance during their time with the coaches from American All-Star gymnastics and Alpha Crossfit. Throughout the week they had "Eat This, Not That" trivia on morning announcements and learned what foods are best for their bodies. The students were extremely engaged in the activities and increasingly interested in being healthy.

Man's Best Friend is One of the Best Friends of Many CISD Students

Kaiser" is a 9-year-old Alaskan Malamute and is part of the "K-9 Classmates"

program whose goal is to help children who are struggling with reading. Students find it easy to read to Kaiser in a no pressure setting. His trainer sits with the children and helps them with reading, pronunciation and sounding out words.

Communities in Schools brings has been instrumental in bringing this program to several Comal ISD campuses including Startzville, Clear Spring, Oak Creek and Freiheit Elementary schools. "We've seen that this really boosts the confidence of the students who work with Kaiser," said Jan Bettersworth, Startzville Elementary principal. "They are very comfortable with the dog," said Sissy Williamson, of K-9 Classmates. "Kaiser went through three years of training. He's very sweet and we're lucky to have him."
