Toy Presentations

We were excited to collaborate this November with the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis and the Mid-South for our Annual Toy presentation. This presentation allows our therapists to share some of their favorite toys with parents that are not only fun, but developmentally appropriate and can address targeted skill areas.  The Sensory Shop of Southaven brought many toys and the families who attended Bright Steps were able to play with and purchase the toys right then. It was a fun event!

The Sensory Shop also came to the Brightsong clinic on December 5th with toys for therapists to demonstrate and for families to purchase. The kids had fun, several toys were purchased and Brightsong increased their toy inventory as well!

Still Need a Holiday Gift Idea?

The Brightsong team has compiled our list of favorite toys for children from birth to elementary school.  Each toy not only works on specific developmental skills, but they're fun too!

Keeping Holiday Stress Low

By: Amy Foster M.S.Ed.

It is nearly impossible to not be stressed over something during this busy time of year, but here are a few ideas on how to keep it to a minimum.

Reevaluate traditions: Some parents love to have the annual mall picture of their kids dressed in holiday clothing, SOME kids love it as well. If your child considers it a frightening or overstimulating experience, this might be a tradition to reevaluate. You can also take advantage of a Caring Santa, if it is available in your area. If you are still forming family traditions, take a look at this cute link Magical Family Christmas Traditions for some great ideas.

Pick just a few good ones: Ask your children to tell you about the things you did the year before. If looking at lights sticks out in their mind or Elf on a Shelf is something they remember, those would be something to find time for again this year. If wrapping presents, baking cookies or delivering meals to neighbors are traditions they recall, then what a great way to involve your children in holiday cheer! Gingerbread houses, paper snowflakes, and stringing popcorn are all activities that can strengthen fine motor skills too! Keeping these traditions stress free means planning ahead to have materials read. When you do have time to do these activities with the kids, make the time spent together the sole focus, not the product. Do you stress yourself out unnecessarily trying to CREATE traditions? This year reevaluate what is important to you, and what you want your children remember of the experience.

Make Lists: Make a list of things you CAN do during a holiday season, and then cross off the things that can wait a year (or two, or ten). Circle the things that are a priority for your family. I used to think that the Christmas specials on TV were something I was going to try to record (and I usually missed them anyway).  This year I'm letting Grandma worry about that and they can watch them when we are at her house. What you don't want kids to remember is that the holiday season is a time when families run around frantically complaining about everything that needs to get done. I also find that making a chart for gifts like this one keeps me organized! Prepare your family: See our blog post on Handling the Holidays.

Rest and Relax: The holiday buildup can be exhausting. Make sure to take time for rest and plan a day or two where the only "plan" is to relax at home! Sleep in, then stay in your PJ's all day. Your children will love it! Also, adequate sleep can help you defend your family against all these winter germs!
