about life at Hinkletown Mennonite School.

In this issue:
Greetings!  Main

We welcome Miss Irene Irawati, from Indonesia, to the HMS community as our international volunteer with Mennonite Central Committee's International Volunteer Exchange Program (IVEP). A 2015 graduate of Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary with a degree in Holistic Child Development, Miss Irene is working primarily in the Pre-K classroom and the library. In October she will begin teaching all students about her home country.

Miss Irene (as the Pre-K students call her) comes from the city of Semarang on the the island of Java, one of Indonesia's 17,000 islands. She has one younger brother who is a student in university. Her mother works in a bank and her father is employed by an agricultural business. Her family are members of JKI (Christian Congregation in Indonesia) Injil Kerajaan, one of the Mennonite churches in Indonesia.

Miss Irene is very interested in writing, photography, and hiking. While here at HMS she is being hosted by Dave & Janina Knowles and is enjoying getting to know their family. A new food she is enjoying is shepherd's pie!

Welcome Miss Irene and thank her for serving here at HMS!

2016 Special Giving Project at HinkleFEST & Auction
Musical Instruments to build Music Curriculum at HMS

Studies show that learning music or how to play a musical instrument at a young age helps a child's brain develop in ways that support more effective learning overall. Music instruments also provide a hands-on way of learning music basics. HMS wants all students to have the chance to explore their interests and aptitude in music through choir time, instrumental groups and other music appreciation opportunities.

This year the special giving project goal at the auction will be $9,000 for music instruments. As part of our strategic initiative to promote the fine and performing arts, grade 3-5 students will learn to play an instrument as part of their general music classes. HMS would like to be able to lend these instruments to students at no cost to parents. Thus, we would like to grow a collection of new and used instruments that students can use.

Our new music teacher, Mrs. Janelle Zook Cunalata, is working on a partnership with a local music store to provide repairs and maintenance.  We will invite members of our community at the auction to help us raise $9,000 toward the purchase of instruments and this exciting music initiative.
