NewsLink is your source for up-to-date stories
and information about life at Hinkletown Mennonite School.
Welcome to the 2016-17 School Year! Welcome

We extend a special welcome to new families and new students who, along with returning families have a lot to look forward to as we anticipate a new year where God is already at work.

The HMS summer crew is busy cleaning classrooms and desks. Teachers are writing their July class letters and the administrative team is preparing the big early-August mailing. You may even see new paint adding color to some of our hallways!

NewsLink is an important way your family can stay in the loop of what is happening. We don't want anyone to miss out on the valuable learning and community building opportunities you will find at HMS!

Let's expect great things for our lives and that of our children because we serve a great God who is already going before us, preparing for our time together as a Christian community!

Serving with you,
Dawn Landes, Administrator/Principal

HELLO . . . AND WELCOME

Mrs. Renita Denlinger will join our early childhood team, teaching a third section of kindergarten. Renita has served as a long-term substitute in several HMS classes in recent years and regularly as a daily substitute teacher. Renita and her husband Brian are parents to three HMS students: Kira, who just graduated; Kyle, who will be in grade 4; and Katie, who will be in grade 3.

Mr. Jeremy Horning will take on the Middle School Coordinator role this year in place of math teacher, Melody Hartman. Jeremy is an HMS alumnus and is entering his 9th year teaching language arts & Bible in the middle school.

GOOD-BYE . . . WE WILL MISS YOU!

Mrs. Cheryl Landis, music teacher at HMS for 16 years, has resigned. She said she will miss teaching and the students, but is excited to focus on a new and growing personal business venture!

We wish Mrs. Doris Zimmerman well on her retirement after 22 years of driving for HMS. Doris and her family are former HMS patrons and have been active volunteers at HMS.

After 20 years, we said an unexpected good-bye to Mr. Robert Landis, husband of driver, Cindy Landis. Bob passed away on May 23, 2016.

Best wishes to Mr. Sean Raiser, our in-house tech support, as he moves to Mechanicsburg and on to a new job this summer!

Celebrating Success: 2015-16 Fundraising ReportEOYFunds

We are thankful for God's provision this past year! Through the involvement of many people HMS finished the 2015-16 fiscal year with a small surplus. We had record participation and support for our fundraising activities this past year:
  • Thanks to our many supportive parents, grandparents, alumni and other friends of the school, HMS met its operating fund needs for the year AND replenished most of the capital reserves that paid for the significant campus improvements last fall.
    • Operating Fund gifts for 2015-16 totaled $85,000, meeting our 2015-16 budget goal.
    • Capital Replacement gifts toward our needs on the completed parking, soccer field and drainage work equaled $73,730.62.
    • Since the end-of-year challenge was announced in May (to match each new $1 given with 50 cents), HMS received $21,376.85, exceeding the challenge goal of $13,000.
  • Thanks to many diligent hands from volunteers and staff, we met or exceeded the budgeted goals for the auction, fall poinsettia & cake sale, spring chicken BBQ & Servathon, and our annual golf tournament!
  • HMS met our goals for scholarship monies through the EITC/OSTC programs, providing support for families in need of financial assistance at HMS. We are grateful for the many businesses who give through this program to impact families and students, keeping an HMS education accessible and affordable for families.
HMS is grateful for the opportunity to partner, not only with families, but also churches, business owners and other donors who help make an education at HMS possible for many families.

Summer Office Hours
The HMS office is open from 9 am-2 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays. Office staff may be in the office at other times as well, but there is sure to be someone assigned to the front desk to help you if you contact the office during the these summer hours.

Every family . . . every student . . . every teacher . . . can't miss it!!!

Everyone is expected to make time to join in the fun and celebration at our annual HinkleFEST & Benefit Auction. The students and teachers make items as classes to sell. Parents and older students volunteer. And lots of community members as well as HMS families contribute items for the auction. With the Chicken Run, pony rides, bounce house and more, it's an event the students love . . . make sure it is on your calendar!

OVERALL THEME:  If you know of any items or experiences you think people would love to bid on related to outdoor work or activities, please consider donating them or suggesting them to the planning team. A table will be set up in the front lobby for auction donations.

BAKED GOODS:  Another way to support the auction is with baked goods.  The bake stand will feature, "Recipes from your Family Heritage." Watch NewsLink for more information on how to donate.

MEAT/FARM PRODUCE SALE:  Our Friday night auction will feature a meat and local farm produce sale again this year. Contact Dawn Landes if you have an interest or questions about this opportunity.

We are presently exploring a John Deere Gator with limited floor model use with a local business as a donation. Please contact Jody Fausnight or Dawn Landes with any creative ideas you may have about auction items for our event this fall.

This is our biggest fundraising event of the year, helping to underwrite both operations and capital replacement needs at HMS.
