Great News! Goes Out.....Craft & Commerce
The Great News! Goes Out article will feature Kristin (Cooking School Director) and Kelsey (Cooking School Assistant Manager) as they sample various dishes around San Diego. Please feel free to email customerservice@great-news.com to recommend any restaurants you would like to see featured.
We know that Craft and Commerce is one of the top restaurants in San Diego, booming on the cocktail/ mixologist scene so we thought we would see for ourselves. Whether you are looking to have a great night out on the town, the perfect date spot, or some happy hour fun, Craft and Commerce is definitely a place to try. When we were first seated the décor brought back memories of our first newsletter review of The Smoking Goat because of the rustic books seen throughout the establishment. With those memories at the forefront of our mind we were very excited to start our journey through the down home American comfort foods of Craft & Commerce.
We first ordered cocktails, Kelsey ordered the Lay Lady Lay one of their well-known beer cocktails and Kristin knew she wanted something spicy so the bartender whipped up a drink using her specifications (this was one of the 600 cocktails made in house)! Right away we knew this place was something special. Next, we enjoyed our drinks with a few appetizers: Devils On Horseback and Corn Dogs. The devils on horseback came with bacon wrapped dates stuffed with pepper jack cheese and bacon wrapped apples stuffed with bleu cheese. This was a sweet and savory decadent dish. The corn dogs were definitely not your average corn dogs as they were wrapped in bacon before they were dipped in the batter and came with two dipping sauces, whole grain mustard and jalapeno cheddar sauce. Although the sauces were both tasty, the corn dogs could simply be enjoyed by themselves.

We always try to order at least one vegetarian dish and after the bacon appetizers we decided to try the Veggie Burger which consisted of a faro and black bean patty with cucumber, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and dill yogurt. This burger had a Mediterranean twist and was very refreshing with the cucumber and dill yogurt sauce. We were also intrigued that there was faro incorporated into the patty as we had never seen a veggie burger with that ingredient.

The next two dishes were classics of down home comfort food, Fried Chicken and Smoked Ribs. The chicken came with a buttermilk slaw, mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a spicy vinegar. The chicken had the perfect crispy crust and juicy meat. Again a dish that can be enjoyed without an added sauce which is encouraged by Craft & Commerce's "no ketchup" rule. The smoked ribs had a Carolina rub, buttermilk biscuits, and slaw. The meat fell right off the bone and melted in your mouth.

Finishing dinner the way we started, we were reminded of the Smoking Goat when they brought our check in a "guest book to sign". If you find the book we signed, take a picture with our note and you will win a FREE cooking class!
