Great News! Goes Out..... Slater 50/50

The Great News! Goes Out article will feature Kristin (Cooking School Director) and Kelsey (Cooking School Assistant Manager) as they sample various dishes around San Diego. Please feel free to email customerservice@great-news.com to recommend any restaurants you would like to see featured.

Last month's newsletter was a shout out to all our veggie lovers so we felt like this month should focus on our meat lovers! What better place to do so than Slater 50/50, home of the 50/50 burger (half ground beef and half ground bacon patty)! Slater 50/50 has some of the most extraordinary burgers you will find here in San Diego including a Peanut Butter and Jealousy Burger. This restaurant offers a laid back atmosphere featuring over 100 craft beers and about 30 flat screen televisions which means you are sure to find your favorite team playing. If you don't find a signature burger you want to try don't fret, Slater 50/50 offers a "design your own burger" option. You choose your patty, bun, cheese, sauces, and topping then you even get to name your creation.

Slater 50/50 has a few tasty appetizers to choose from including fried mac n' cheese; a vampire dip made of garlic, cheese and artichoke dip; and beer battered onion rings. We decided to have the fried dill pickle chips. One thing to note about Slater 50/50 is that they focus on quality house-made sauces and breads. The pickle chips came with a mustard dipping sauce which balanced the tang of the pickle. The batter was nice and light, not taking any attention away from the pickle.

Next we ordered three types of burgers: The 50/50; Carbonara; and the Burger of the Month. The beef for all burgers is ground fresh daily using sterling silver sirloin and all buns are made in house or sourced locally. The 50/50 burger was a must try since its part of the restaurant's name. On the 50/50 burger was a fried egg, avocado mash, pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo served on a brioche bun. This burger has to be cooked well done since the patty consists of pork. This was probably our favorite burger. The Carbonara burger came with pancetta, sun dried tomatoes, creamy Alfredo on a bed of micro-basil served on a ciabatta roll. Needless to say this was a very decadent burger but definitely one to try. The burger of the month was the "Best of the Wurst" featuring a 100% German bratwurst Patty topped with Swiss, green apple and rendered bacon sauerkraut with their original mustard sauce served on a pretzel bun. This burger is an ode to Oktoberfest!

Not only does Slater 50/50 offer an extensive menu of burgers but they also have a specialty plates menu as well. We decided to have their Fried Chicken and Pancake dish which was their take on the classic fried chicken and waffles. This dish consisted of fried chicken with house-made bacon infused country gravy, thick bacon, and a fried egg between pancakes smothered with maple syrup. As you can tell from the picture this is a huge portion size (and no we did not finish all of it). Surprisingly this was our favorite of the night as it offered a sweet and savory taste of down home comfort food.

Slater 50/50 is definitely one for the books! Their take on creating new and unique burgers has propelled them to the top; and they are considered one of the best burger joints in San Diego.

Tips & Tricks with Jessica
Jessica Rhomberg is the Kitchen Manager here at Great News!

Can't stand it when you're baking blueberry muffins and all of your blueberries sink to the bottom while they bake?

Try lightly dusting berries, nuts, or chocolate with flour before you fold them into your muffin, cookie or bread batter and they will be distributed evenly throughout your baked item.

The flour acts as an adhesive allowing the batter to stick to the slick surface of berries, nuts, and chocolate.
