Chess Club
Program 2 Registration Now Open!

coin-stack-chessboard.jpg
Coach Chouchan (pronounced Shoushan) Airapetian is the IMS Chess Club Coach. She is an accomplished coach and her focus is to help students learn and master chess while players are having an exceptional experience: fun!

We have 2 programs all year around. Chess Club Program 1 starts from September and go till end of June,  Program 2 began in February, but there is still room to register!

We meet in Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:00 pm in the IMS Library (temporarily in the old Student Center). There are activity buses to take students home.

Practicing chess for one hour weekly can make a significant impact on a student's grade, strategic thinking and brain development, and improve his social skills in long-term development.

For further questions, please contact Coach Chouchan at chornyaa@msn.com or call 206.914.4252.

Advocacy Update
From Our PTA Advocacy Team

Basic education is vital to creating successful students, employees, and contributors to our community and economy.

Then join the discussion with our PTA advocacy team (advocacy@miptacouncil.org), made up of interested parents, teachers, and other community stakeholder.
Why are our students underperforming? Could it be related to the fact that Massachusetts spends almost $15K per pupil, while Washington spends about $10K? Did you know that Mercer Island ranks 144th out of 295 Washington districts for per pupil spending, INCLUDING donations to PTA and the foundation, and that funding may be at risk.

Another good source on education funding is The Greater Good Campaign - The Seattle Times.       (http://greatergood.seattletimes.com/)
