Homes 4 the Holidays December 1-31, 2015

The Tri-County Animal Shelter will celebrate Home 4 the Holidays December 1-31. This extra special event is a holiday adoption drive that saves the lives of orphan pets and raises awareness about the importance of pet adoption during the holiday season.

More families bring a new pet home during the holiday season than at any other time of the year. Tri County Animal Shelter is excited to be participating in this annual event.

Come adopt an animal from Tri County Animal Shelter during the month of December to get a special adoption price.

Dog Adoptions: $100  |  Cat Adoptions $10

Let's give all of our animals a forever home that they deserve.
Holiday Safety Tips

Tis' the season for friends, family, and holiday feasts . . . but also for possible distress for our animal companions. As you gear up for the holidays try to keep your pet's diet and exercise habits as close to a normal routine as possible.

National Mutt Day

Did you know that mixed breed dogs are usually healthier than their pedigree pals, they are generally better behaved - and they live longer! Better still . . . they are every bit as capable as pure bred dogs, and they are just as good at performing specialized duties such as guiding the blind and bomb/drug sniffing.

December 2 is National Mutt Day. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the United States and to educate the public about the number of mixed breed dogs waiting for a loving and caring home.

And Remember . . . one of the country's most famous movie star doggy was Benji . . . a mixed breed Terrier.

Tri County Animal shelter is celebrating this day with reduced fee adoptions for any mutt. Come find the mutt of your dreams for only $85.
Roof Over Your Head Day is December 3

All across our nation there are many animals that do not have the things that are a normal part of everyday life, such as the roof over our heads. Our shelter animals are hoping to find a permanent roof over their head on December 3. Stop by the Tri County Animal Shelter between Noon and 5 p.m. to adopt and get your new pet for a reduced adoption fee. On this special day dog adoptions are $85, and cat adoptions are only $5.

If you cannot adopt, please consider volunteering at the shelter. We are always in need of an extra pair of helping hands for our animals.

Donations of animal food, toys, or a special treat for the animals are also a great help.
Holiday Party

Come celebrate the holidays with the animals and staff on December 19. Light refreshments will be served.

Enjoy holiday music and FREE pictures with Santa - you can even bring your pet from home. All adoptions will include a holiday stocking for your new pet to enjoy.

Local rescue organizations will be here to help our "Rescue Only" animals find their forever homes.
Pets as Gifts

You may think that giving an animal as a gift is a good idea, but . . . Pets are a huge responsibility. Pets are a long term commitment of time, money, and energy that may exceed the recipient's abilities. A successful adoption requires time and thought.

Give a SHELTER Gift Certificate Instead

Tri-County Animal Shelter gift certificates are available for use throughout the year. Pair the gift certificate with a gift basket of pet-related items such as a leash and collar, toys, treats, bedding, and food. You can also include books or videos about training and living with a companion animal.

Giving a gift certificate gives the adopter an opportunity to meet a few animals before making the right match for the family.

Why You Should Spay/Neuter Your Pet
Curb pet overpopulation and make your pet healthier

The decision to spay or neuter your pet is an important one for pet owners. But it can be the single best decision you make for his long-term welfare.

Getting your pet spayed or neutered can:
  • Reduce the number of homeless pets killed
  • Improve your pet's health
  • Reduce unruly behavior
  • Save on the cost of pet care

Tags and Licensing Are Required

Keep identification tags on your pet ... it could be your pets ticket to get back home. Both dogs and cats need ID. Be sure your animals wear a collar with an ID tag, a county license, and rabies tag. Also, don't forget to microchip your animal. Keep your personal information with the microchip company up to date. These identifiers could help your neighbor return your animal to you instead of taking him to the animal shelter. Dogs in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's Counties must have a county license. Cats in Charles and Calvert Counties also require a county license. To obtain a pet license you must have a current rabies vaccine for your pet.
