Developing Student Leaders
Looking to the Future!
It is wonderful to watch Betty Wasswa and the staff at Rock of Ages School develop and institute new programs that encourage the students to expand their horizons and nourish their potential.
This semester the staff started a form of student government in an attempt to improve student participation in school activities and programs, give the students some responsibility and help develop their leadership skills.
The staff chose a method of student government that uses prefects. The term prefect is derived from the Latin word "prefectus," which literally means "make in front." In an academic setting, prefects are leaders-often upperclassmen-who possess a high degree of commitment to the school's values and ideals. Student prefects are given a specific role/responsibility and limited authority over their peers. .
Below you will find the prefect roles defined by the staff and the names of students elected to those roles by their peers. The article was written by a school staff member. It is an insightful and interesting view into the workings of the school. If you are a sponsor, you might find your sponsored child among these budding leaders!

THE PREFECTS BODY OF ROCK OF AGES ACADEMY for 2014 -2015
Improving Student Participation
At the beginning of this term, our teachers held a meeting to look for a way to improve the student participation in school activities and programs and came up with a number of ideas. Among
them was to have the pupils have their own leaders who would understand and work with them, thereby grooming them for various responsibilities as well as in leadership.
Elections
The teachers decided that democratic free and fair elections were to be organized and to respect the students choices for individuals elected if he/she met the requirements.
Many students submitted applications for the various posts. They were allowed to campaign, giving speeches to convince others to vote for them, all under the watchful eyes of a supervisor.
