"If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday." Isaiah 58:10
Today the food you bought for families of your sponsored ROA children was handed out. Each family received 3kgs of sugar, 3 kg of beans, 5 kg of rice , 5 kgs of posho, 1 flat of eggs and a bar of soap. Betty the director, of Rock of Ages School tells us that it is a blessing for these kids and parents to get extra food, especially for the grandmothers who are taking care of grandchildren. She adds it is doubly true for grandmothers who care for their grandkids because most of them have no jobs and getting food is hard.
We have worked closely with Betty to ensure that as much of the money you contribute goes for food. Other than banking fees associated with moving money, every dollar goes into purchasing food. Each month we send a list of the kids who are to receive the extra food and a suggested list of food item to purchase. Food is purchased in bulk, divided up, and then distributed to the families. Typically it is moms and grandmothers who do with the packaging and distribution. The family signs that they have received the food, and the signed list is scanned and sent back to us. In a cash economy, receipts are not always available, but if they are; Betty scans them, as well.
It is easy for us to take for granted the abundance of food we are blessed with in this country. Even those who struggle with poverty have resource at their disposal: food banks, soup kitchens, school lunch programs, food stamps, food pantries. There are no such safety nets in Uganda. You are the safety net for these families. Your generosity is light that is rising in the darkness as proclaimed Isaiah 58:10 . Thank you, from the children who are not going to bed hungry tonight.
