Have you ever listened to a voice that touched your soul? Ever heard a sound so deep it made you stop what you were doing and turn inward, even if just for a moment?
That is the power of Harmonic Chant. The Harmonic Presence Foundation describes it this way:
"Quite literally it is the music of overtones, of proportions and multiplications which hold sway throughout the universe and govern all spatial and mathematical relationships. As music, these wondrous sounds retain an extraordinary mystery, which would be appropriate for a landing on Mars or the moon, for they do not belong to man. They make every listener feel humble and yet part of the great system."
Harmonic Chant is a type of overtone singing - a form of chanting where the artist controls the acoustic resonance of the human vocal tract as air travels from the lungs, past the vocal folds, and out of the lips to produce a melody.
The singer manipulates the shape of the mouth, larynx and pharynx and creates more than one pitch at the same time, producing soothing, other-worldly sounds that can lead the listener on a soulful journey.
Overtone singing or throat singing originated in Mongolia thousands of years ago. Author, composer, singer, musician and meditation instructor David Hykes is one of the earliest pioneers of overtone singing in the West.
Hykes traveled to Mongolia, Tibet and the Middle East and collaborated with the Dalai Lama and the Gyuto and Gyume monks to develop Harmonic Chant, his approach to contemplative music.
"Hauntingly beautiful!" said one yogi of Hykes™ music. "As a yoga and meditation teacher, I use the Harmonic Convergence in my classes. Clients are amazed. It is hard to imagine that David Hykes and others are using their voices only. Stunning!"
Hykes has been teaching harmonic singing as a form of healing that promotes harmonization, spiritual growth and compassionate presence for decades.
Research from the American Music Therapy Association says sound and music therapies like these can promote mental health in several different ways by:
- Improving self-image/Increased self-esteem
- Decreasing anxiety/agitation
- Enhancing interpersonal relationships
- Improving group cohesiveness
- Promoting successful and safe emotional release
Meet David Hykes in person at a two-day workshop on Harmonic Healing at the New York Open Center on May 2nd and 3rd from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.
And now we want to hear from you, what type of music soothes your soul? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Finding Inner Courage
with Mark Nepo Saturday, May 9, 10-5:30pm
The original notion of the word courage means to stand by one's core. This workshop, based on Marks' book Finding Inner Courage, is an exploration into how to find our way to our core, and to then sustain the practice of living from that core-to live out of our courage. The courage we all admire-where one rises to meet a dangerous situation, grows from another kind of courage: inner courage.
Mark Nepo will also be teaching and evening workshop on Friday, May 8th entitled Reduced to Joy.

June 4-9 (Pre-conference, 6/3 and post- conferences between 6/9-16)
Join us for the eleventh in the Open Center's series of international conferences on the Western Tradition as we journey to Carcassonne, Languedoc, in an exquisitely beautiful region of the South of France. Long known as a focal point for numerous spiritual streams, this area was at the heart of the high medieval culture of both the Troubadours and the Gnostic Christian Cathars. The Bons Hommes, as the Cathars called themselves, created one of the most remarkable and enigmatic spiritual movements of the Middle Ages.
We are mighty pleased to announce that the website for our June 2015 Esoteric Quest in the South of France is now live! Please visit us here, where you will get to explore all the details of our conference, from accommodation options, travel to and from France or Spain, post-conference itineraries, and our suggested reading lists, to our oh-so-convenient online registration.
Click HERE to read an interview with Esoteric Quest faculty member Kayleen Asbo.

Holistic psychology explores not only the physical and mental dimensions of life, but also the spiritual, ecological, relational, somatic, mythological, and transpersonal aspects of the psyche. The separation of these dimensions of the whole person can be seen as contributing to the personal, cultural, and planetary crises and pathologies of our time. This program follows the way of wholeness, and offers a path out of division and alienation into healing and regeneration.
"Holistic" shares word origins with "heal," "holy," and "whole." A holistic psychology is therefore one that respects the complexity, integrity, and multi-dimensionality of the human being. This unique 100-hour certificate program consists of 7 weekends, 1 one-day workshop and 4 webinars with some of the leading practitioners in the emerging field of holistic psychology. The long-standing friendship between the Open Center and the California Institute of Integral Studies has played a significant role in its development.
