CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER UPDATE
| |
|
|
Much has been happening in recent weeks as RVM Australia and CRVA work towards forming a new integrated body to represent Australia's caravanning industry. Earlier this month, the joint working party met to develop governance recommendations, and to continue to advance the project ahead of a planned 1 July 2014 commencement.
Both parties are currently undertaking due diligence, and professional advice is being considered ahead of the meeting of each organisation's respective boards in mid February. A number of member briefings are planned around some of the upcoming caravan shows with the first of these briefings to take place at the next Member Update Meeting to be held in Adelaide during the Adelaide Caravan & Camping Show.
In the meantime, both organisations continue to function and deliver existing member services and benefits.

RVM Australia Awards
Now that businesses are getting back into stride for the new year, we're hearing from quite a few companies interested in sponsoring our prestigious new RVM Australia Awards for Excellence to be held on 22 May.
At least two major companies have expressed an interest in becoming our major sponsor, and therefore also the naming-rights sponsor of the RVM Australia Member of the Year award.
There are sponsorship opportunities for a full spectrum of awards for important contributions to our industry, so you may well find one that's a perfect match for your own area of excellence.
Nominations will be called for in February. This promises to be a very exciting RVM Australia initiative that will generate much interest and profile for our industry, and I strongly encourage members to participate.

RVMAP second cycle
The next cycle of RVMAP for RV manufacturers is well under way. Following completion of the initial roll-out cycle and a subsequent review, the vehicle checklists have been improved to capture more safety elements in accordance with RVM Australia's Code of Practice, which is additional to the relevant Australian Design Rules and Australian Standards applicable to the manufacture of RVs.
This year's audits include both physical inspections of RVs and desktop audits of members' quality and compliance systems which will help to determine the frequency cycle of each Member's inspections for the future.

Advocacy progress
A good rapport is being established with the office of the Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, since first contacting the Minister to congratulate him on his appointment. Mr Macfarlane's policy adviser assures us that the Minister is very supportive of our efforts to address non-compliance concerns with imported product.
In that regard, a delegation of industry association representatives plans to meet soon with senior representatives from Vehicle Safety Standards to better understand the role they play in the RV import process.
To find out more about this and other RVM Australia news including the formation of a new integrated body to represent Australia's caravanning industry, members are invited to attend our next MUM which will take place during the Adelaide Caravan & Camping Show. I look forward to seeing you then.

Implementation of new gas regulations
Attendees at the recent gas regulations workshops received a comprehensive 13-page summary of the key changes between the 2004, 2010 and 2013 editions of AS/NZS 5601 part 2 of the regulations. The comparison of changes between 2013 and 2010 will be relevant to most states where the 2010 edition has been adopted (with the exception of Victoria and NSW).
Members who were unable to attend the workshop can click here to request a copy of the document.
In Victoria, members should familiarize themselves and prepare for implementation of AS/NZS5601.2:2013 by March 2014. We will keep members informed of the implementation dates around the nation as they come to hand.

Attachment of safety chain to the drawbar
We recently sought clarification from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development regarding the method of attaching a safety chain to the drawbar.
Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development states that:
"Welding is not mandated as a method of attaching a safety chain to the drawbar of a trailer; bolting is an acceptable method. In either case the safety chain attachment must withstand the test forces, separately applied, without incurring either any residual deformation that would interfere or degrade the function of the assembly or any breaks, cracks or separation of the components. The static forces must be maintained for not less than 10 seconds."
