DEC 2013
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER UPDATE

Much has been happening in recent weeks as RVM Australia and CRVA work towards forming a new integrated body to represent Australia's caravanning industry. Our joint working group met for the first time on 11 December 2013 to get the project moving expeditiously and responsibly. The working group comprises representatives from both organisations, facilitated by an independent consultant.

The first meeting generated much discussion and the all-important project management plan covering purpose, scope, project coordination and scheduling, stakeholder engagement and communication management.

The working party has set itself an ambitious but achievable timeframe to deliver its report and recommendations prior to the proposed implementation of the new entity on 1 July 2014.

Integral to the working group's charter is regular communication with members of both organisations to ensure that they are well informed and supportive of the proposed integration.

RVM Australia Awards

I am pleased to announce the inaugural RVM Australia Awards for Excellence that will culminate at a prestigious black tie dinner in Melbourne on 23 May 2014.

The Awards, to be held annually, celebrate outstanding member achievement and innovation in Australian RV manufacturing. Categories include: Employee of the Year; Young Achiever of the Year; Environmental Innovation; OH&S Achievement; RV Design Achievement; RV Marketing Achievement; RV Safety Innovation; Manufacturing Excellence; Industry Contributor of the Year; and the ultimate award for RVM Australia Member of the Year.

Nominations will be called for early in 2014 together with details of the Awards event. This promises to be a very exciting RVM Australia initiative that will generate much interest and profile for our industry, and I strongly encourage members to participate.

Advocacy progress

At a time when manufacturing is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons because of the car company upheavals, I am pleased to report that Canberra knows the RV manufacturing industry is alive and well.

We have developed a good rapport with the office of the Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, since first contacting the Minister to congratulate him on his appointment. Our main point of contact is Mr Macfarlane's policy adviser, and he assures us that the Minister is very supportive of our efforts to address non-compliance concerns with imported product.

The Minister's office is particularly impressed with RVMAP, which it perceives as an excellent initiative on the part of our industry, and we can expect continuing interest and support from this quarter as RVMAP is fully implemented this year.

RVMAP second cycle

RV manufacturer members will by now be aware that the second cycle of RVMAP is well under way. Following completion of the first cycle and a subsequent review, the vehicle checklists have been improved to capture more safety elements in accordance with RVM Australia's Code of Practice, which is additional to the relevant Australian Design Rules and Australian Standards applicable to the manufacture of RVs.

The second round of inspections and audits will re-commence in earnest when members return to production after their well-earned Christmas/New Year break. The tremendous support of manufacturer members in having their vehicles ready for inspection is appreciated, as it assists greatly in enabling my technical advisors to maintain the program schedule.

Gas workshops

Eddie Wills (Jurgens Australia), Murray Longe (RVM Australia) and Dave Petrie (DC Solutions/OzCharge)

Earlier this month RVM Australia conducted two member workshops covering the new gas regulations. Held at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Craigieburn and Knox Civic Centre in Wantirna South, the workshops were generously sponsored by DC Solutions/OzCharge.

Presenters from Energy Safe Victoria included Enzo Alfonsetti, Manager, Type A Gas Appliance Safety, and Jean-Marie Ntahonkiriye, Equipment Safety Compliance Officer. Also presenting was Gerard O'Farrell, Director of Plumbing at the Victorian Building Authority.

Both workshops were very well attended by members from Victoria and interstate and they attracted many relevant questions.

All attendees received a comprehensive 13-page summary of the key changes between the 2004, 2010 and 2013 editions of AS/NZS 5601 part 2 of the regulations. The comparison of changes between 2013 and 2010 will be relevant to most states where the 2010 edition has been adopted (with the exception of Victoria and NSW).

Members who were unable to attend the workshop can click here to request a copy of the document.

Implementation of new gas regulations

in Victoria

At the workshop, Enzo Alfonsetti of Energy Safe Victoria was asked if there would be a transition period for compliance to AS/NZS5601.2:2013 once the standard is called up in legislation. We have subsequently been informed by Enzo that this is not standard practice and that members should familiarize themselves and prepare for implementation of AS/NZS5601.2:2013 by March 2014.

We will keep members informed of the implementation dates around the nation as they come to hand.

Making Standards accessible

RVM Australia has recently arranged low-cost access to Australian Standards for RVM Australia members.

We have negotiated to provide members with read-only access to all the relevant Standards for much less than the cost of buying the documents outright, as part of our commitment to helping members comply fully with all applicable rules and regulations.

Members can now consult the relevant Standards at a cost that makes sense for a small to medium business. This covers all 30-plus Standards applicable to RV manufacturing, including the new AS/NZS 5601 Gas Installation Set: 2013 plus the latest updates and amendments.

To arrange your low-cost online access, complete the order form attached.
