Different Kind of Medication Fights Hard-to-Treat Depression

A first-of-its-kind antidepressant drug discovered by a Northwestern University professor has been shown to safely alleviate depression symptoms within hours and produce positive effects that last for about seven days from a single dose.
In clinical trials administered at 12 sites across the country, a single dose of GLYX-13 resulted in significant reductions in depression symptoms among participants who had shown little improvement with other drugs. Read more >

Scientists Identify Anxiety and Depression Biomarker in Youths
|
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered a unique biological indicator that could be used to identify adolescents who are at risk of developing depression and anxiety disorders. These findings could lead to the development of inexpensive cognitive tests to screen for these illnesses, particularly in people known to be at high genetic and social risk.
This type of screening test could result in early identification and intervention and help determine which treatments are likely to work best for treating depressions and anxiety disorders. Read more >

Intense Dreams May Heighten OCD Symptoms

A recent scientific study examined how the dream experiences of nearly 600 individuals with OCD affected their symptoms when they were awake. Researchers found that intense dreams were frequently followed by an increase in compulsive behavior. Scientists in Hong Kong discovered that people who experienced dreams with strong emotional messages--feelings of guilt, shame and anger--experienced greater compulsive behavior the next day. Magical thinking--thinking that one had super powers or could control other people or things--also elevated OCD symptoms. Read more >
