Tentative Contract Agreement BUSD and Berkeley Federation of Teachers
The Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) and the Berkeley Federation of Teachers (BFT) announced this past Friday that a tentative agreement in the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 contract negotiations was reached. (It is "tentative" until ratified by the BFT and approved by the BUSD Board of Education). The agreement addresses increased compensation for BUSD teachers that includes a two year compensation increase totaling eight percent (8%) over two years, comprised of a five percent (5%) ongoing increase that includes a one percent (1%) increase to the District's contribution to health benefits, and a three percent (3%) one-time bonus paid in 2016-2017, among other contractual agreements. LCAP Groups Hold Joint Meeting: June 4
Members of the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC), and the Educator Advisory Committee (EAC) have been meeting throughout the school year to provide feedback on the first year's implementation of the Local Control & Accountability Plan (LCAP). These three groups will be meeting jointly on Thursday, June 4th at 6:30 p.m. at Longfellow Middle School to review and discuss updates to the LCAP (2015-16). ( The full draft plan is available online.) State-mandated changes to the LCAP include the new plan template and new metrics for measuring student outcomes. Some of the actions being considered for changes in the plan include:
- Increase RtI2 support in the middle schools,
- Expand mental health partnership to all schools,
- Hire Teacher on Special Assignment focused on recruitment and retention of teachers of color,
- Expand restorative justice practices, including pilot projects in grades K-5 and 9-12, and a middle school partnership with SEEDS.
A public hearing on the LCAP is being held at the June 10th Board Meeting. Further information on the public comment process is available here.
