Berkeley Unified Revises Budget, Projects Cautiously Positive Financial Picture
On Wednesday, March 13 the Berkeley School Board will receive a revised budget for 2012-13 that continues the District's fiscally responsible strategy that has protected Berkeley public school students in recent years.

Read the March 11th Press Release for more information about the District's financial picture.
College and Career Day
Generates Student Enthusiasm
Oski, the Cal Mascot, joined Co-Superintendent Javetta Cleveland at preschool.

Community members across Berkeley worked collaboratively to host the City of Berkeley's
First Annual College and Career Day on March 1st. Students were encouraged to visualize themselves at college and in careers through a variety of activities and presentations.

Cal students visited schools and talked about what it's like to be in college; cheerleaders cheered for student success; parents and community members visited classrooms to share the paths they have taken, and Berkeley Technology Academy held a fair for students to talk with representatives from colleges and in technical career fields.
Longfellow Students Recognized
Dance, poetry, and quotes from famous African Americans filled the halls of Longfellow to mark the end of African American History Month. The school equity team also took the opportunity during assemblies to

specifically recognize African American boys for their academic achievement, challenging them to continue to prioritize hard work and good grades.  The students pictured were recognized at the 6th grade assembly.

Longfellow offers students a variety of support groups, including the one formed with 45 boys and named by the boys as Broth-A-Hood, with an emphasis on the 'A'. Next steps include forming a similar group for girls and reaching out to support African American parents as they help their children navigate the path to college and career.
Superintendent Search:
Thank you for your participation!
As part of the Berkeley School Board's search for a new Superintendent, the Board asked the search firm of Ray and Associates to engage the community in discussions of important characteristics for potential candidates, as well as suggestions for screening and interview questions.

That outreach process has just concluded, and the input is being analyzed and reviewed by the search firm and the Board. There were over 400 responses to a survey, 26 meetings with community stakeholders, and 3 community forums, including one in Spanish. Thank you to all those who participated!

The ideas and issues discussed will help the Board determine which applicants to interview, and what questions to ask of candidates. Once a full analysis of the feedback is complete, a brief summary will be shared with the community on the Superintendent Search webpage.
