Rosa Parks Mathematicians Bring Home Awards
Five girls and five boys from Rosa Parks fifth grade recently participated in a regional math competition sponsored by MathMatters. The challenge was to answer 15 difficult math problems in 30 minutes. Congratulations to all our students who competed and showed they love math! All the students who participated are being recognized by the Berkeley City Council on December 11th.
In discussing the students' success, fifth grade teacher Mary Martin shared that the students really put a lot of effort into practicing. "While their peers were out the door for recess and lunch, our students were preparing for 40 minutes of math discourse. On testing day, though anticipation was palpable, our students encouraged each other throughout. Rosa Parks was a winner, and we were all proud to be a part of that win," she said. |

Energy Efficiency of School Buildings Earns Kudos
 | Gayle Brandt was present to accept the award.
|
The East Bay Environmental Network (EBEN) recently hosted the First Annual Benchmarking Awards Program to honor energy efficiency leaders among Berkeley's commercial and public buildings, including the Berkeley Unified School District. The City of Berkeley gave the awards as part of the Climate Action Plan which sets bold goals for reducing energy waste and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Gayle Brandt was a natural fit to receive the award on behalf of the District. As staff to BUSD Facilities and Maintenance she tracks spikes and drops in energy usage to anticipate inefficiencies and monitors solar power production at the four schools with solar panels.
