Berkeley Students Report Less Use of Alcohol and Drugs and Feeling Safer
Every two years California students in grades 5, 7, 9, and 11 answer questions about health, safety and alcohol, tobacco, and drug use on the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS). Information from the confidential survey is used to educate students and families and to facilitate prevention and early intervention. Results from the January 2012 survey were reported to the School Board with data trends showing Berkeley students engaging less often in risky behaviors and experiencing increased feelings of safety at school. Efforts to further advance these positive trends in student behavior continue at every school and district-wide. |
Classified staff participate in Disaster Preparedness While students had a day off school last Friday, employees from our schools spent the day learning disaster preparedness skills. Hurricane Sandy was an unfortunate reminder of how important it is for school personnel to be trained and prepared.
Instructional Aides (IA's) across the district came together to train in the use of Emergency Evacuation Chairs and in general disaster procedures.
Training with Berkeley High staff covered all of the components of the emergency response teams:
- Fire Suppression, Light Search & Rescue, Disaster First Aid and Sheltering.
