Senior Resources: Elders in Action & SHIBA

 

Portland has many great programs that provide classes, events, and activities for seniors to have fun. But what about the many issues that seniors might deal with surrounding budgeting during retirement or Medicare? Well, here are two very helpful organizations that serve seniors in our community and help them to feel more in control of their finances, find helpful caregivers, and be a better advocate for their needs: Elders in Action and SHIBA! 

 
Senior Centers Around Portland
 
Kids aren't the only ones looking to have fun in the summer! There are various senior centers around Portland that offer daily activities, classes, transportation assistance, and special events to keep seniors engaged with their community. Here are a few senior centers and some of the exciting upcoming and weekly events that they offer

Social Security 101

 

From your first job as a teenager to a decades-long career, you've constantly seen social security reducing your take home pay. Where is it going? When can you access it? Here are some frequently asked questions with helpful tips about getting the most out of your money when you need it.


IRAs, 401Ks, Oh my!

When you are looking at your needs and wants, for all too many people retirement falls really low on the spending priority list. A recent study found that one-third of Americans have less than $1,000 saved for retirement! It's easy for it to fall onto the back burner. You may have a 401k at your work that you keep meaning to enroll in but don't, or even if your workplace doesn't have a retirement plan, IRAs seem mysterious and expensive. Looking to learn more about our Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) for post-secondary education? You're in luck! Our next orientations will be held on July 30th from 5:30-7 pm and August 1st from 10-11:30 am. These will be the final two orientations for 2014.
 
Come to our next Financial Fair!
 Read about it here! It will be held on Saturday August 23rd from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm at the Africa House on NE 102nd Ave. Food, local resources, financial advisers, and activities for kids provided!
