A huge thank you to all of our supporters who joined us at our first annual fundraiser at the Peace House on May 29th. And thank you to our event sponsors Pacific Office Automation, Leslie Jones REMAX equity group, One Pacific Coast Bank, McDonald Jacobs Accountants and Murray Smith and Associates.
We raised over $7,800 while enjoying good company and a compelling story by Landra Glover. Check out our event photos here. If you were not able to make it to the event, you can still support our work by making a donation here. Your generous donation helps us realize our vision of a society where all people have access to safe, affordable financial products and services and the ability to use them well. Thank you!
All the best,
Nancy Yuill

Right now, in our own community, nearly 44% of our children are living in poor or low income households. Today, June 11th United Way is launching the >24 ("More than 24") campaign. >24 is about more than just one day of giving. It marks the start of a new journey to give every child a fair chance. When you give more than $24 to >24, United Way will match your donation 100%, and you'll get to vote for the nonprofit of your choice to win an unrestricted grant from the dollars raised: First place (most votes) gets $10,000. Second place gets $5,000. Third gets $2,500. Together we have the power to create lasting change.

Fidel's Story
In 2010, Fidel emigrated from Cuba. Before coming to the US, Fidel was studying to become a dentist and was one year away from having his degree. When his family got to Portland they connected with Hacienda CDC and from there, Hacienda referred Fidel for our credit builder loan. When Fidel started his credit builder loan he said, "Buying a house is my long term goal and I need a better credit score to do that. But first and most important is just to have the possibility to be financially reliable for other companies where I apply for loans."
Fidel didn't end it with the loan. He wanted to take advantage of Innovative Changes' financial coaching in order to improve his credit as much as possible. Fidel got lucky and was matched up with one of our AmeriCorps VISTAs, Katie. He reflects, "I wanted to participate in the program because that was the only way that I could have my credit back up again. My experience has been incredible especially for the help and attention that I have received from the office and my coach. Everyone knows me now and it feels really comforting."

Spotlight: Ruby Weymouth, IC$ Intern Last month, Innovative Changes welcomed intern Ruby Weymouth to our team. Ruby was connected to our organization through our partner Work Systems Inc. and has been helping with everything from data entry to researching local resources and banking services for our clients. We interviewed Ruby on her past experience, current interests and her passions. Keep reading to learn more about Ruby! Can you explain a little about the work experience program that you are part of? It is a program called Work Systems that gives young people, about 17-21, internships to gain work experience based on what they're interested in. My top choice was a social service organization so they paired me with Innovative Changes. What did you do at your past internship? My past internship was for the GirlStrength program through the Portland Police Bureau. It is a program that teaches both verbal and physical self-defense to teenage girls. At that internship I did a lot of data entry, editing letters and invoices, and set up and tore down volunteer trainings. I also got to be a part of the learning portion of the training for future GirlStrength instructors which was very interesting. Continue reading about Ruby here.
