Innovative Changes
 MAY 2014

You are invited to our first annual fundraising event, Building Hope, being held on Thursday May 29th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the 18th Avenue Peace House.  We'll have wine, soft drinks and delicious appetizers in this lovely Portland mansion.  You'll get to see stories of the people we work with and you'll have the opportunity to support Innovative Changes.

Our theme, building hope, is inspired by our clients.  Every day we see them working hard to improve their financial stability.  They are motivated by a desire for a better future for themselves and for their families. Their optimism, commitment, and resiliency in the face of adversity remind me of what makes our nation strong.  They have faith in the American Dream.  If you work hard you should be able to provide for your family.  We believe that everyone has a right to financial stability, especially people who are working so hard, with hope for a better future.   Please join us on May 29th to honor their work. You can RSVP here.

All the best,

Nancy Yuill

Spotlight: Rosanne Marmor, Jewish Family & Child Service

Rosanne Marmor wears many hats. She has been Innovative Changes' Board President for the past two years. She used to work with one of our first partners, Home Forward, and now she is the Program Services Director at one of our newest partner organizations, Jewish Family and Child Service (JFCS). JFCS provides social services that improve the lives of adults, families and children in the Jewish and general communities. Since we recently started working with JFCS and given Rosanne's dedication to housing stability, community organizing and poverty alleviation we though it about time to highlight her work!

What are you focusing on in your new role as Program Services Director?

I look for new programs to serve the community, especially in relation to children, and focus on a strategic operating plan that diversifies the clientele we serve. We are trying to figure out how to serve more of the population in the Portland area other than Jewish people. I'm particularly excited about our counseling program and services we provide to people that are elderly. We go to people's homes and take care of their needs. There aren't a lot of counseling programs out there that actually go to people's homes.

Patricia's Story

"It seems too good to be true," Patricia exclaimed when she first heard about our Individual Development Account (IDA) program. This is quite common reaction; a match of $3 for every $1 you save is not a deal you see every day, but once Patricia attended our IDA orientation to find out the details of it all she knew it was right for her. "I was stuck in life. I knew that going back to school was something that I wanted to do but I had a lot of fears around it. I wanted to achieve more and the IDA is really a tool to help people help themselves."

Patricia decided to pursue a path of helping others and is in her first year of a Masters degree program in Social Work at Portland State University: "I think that poverty and the barriers people face are manmade. We can reverse that. I am hopeful that through my work I can help people in a way that people have helped me."
