We hope that you have marked the dates for the 2014 AAP Annual Meeting in Nashville on your calendar - Tuesday, February 25 - March 1, 2014.

The Call for Papers and Posters for the 2014 AAP Annual Meeting will open Tuesday, May 21 through Monday, September 9, 2013.  Please plan to submit your abstracts for Poster Board Presentations, Scientific Paper Presentations and The Electrode Store Awards by visiting the AAP website* during this time frame. 

*We are pleased to announce that we will be using a new abstract submission site on the AAP website that streamlines the submission process and co-author involvement.  Instructions will be available on www.physiatry.org in May.

Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback from the 2013 AAP Annual Meeting in New Orleans.  Please continue to do so as your feedback is critical to the development of future programs.  Speakers and Course Directors will receive their individual feedback results next month and a full-detailed analysis will be published in the AAP Summer Newsletter.

VA Research Week 

The annual VA Research Week will be held May 13-17. There will be events celebrating VA research throughout the country, often highlighting the strong partnership between the VA and academic medicine. VA Research Week "is designed to call attention to the achievements of VA researchers and the role they play in providing high quality care for veterans and advancing medical science. It is an opportunity to educate veterans, our elected representatives, and others about research and its impact on treating and preventing disease and disability." This year's theme is "VA Research Inspires."

Rehab-Related Peds Medical Device Survey Request
SUNY Upstate Medical University Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) faculty are working with the Brookings Institution to develop a topic about rehab-related pediatric medical devices within a National Forum on Innovation in Medical Devices, planned for the late spring or early summer 2013.  A brief 7-item needs assessment opinion survey has been developed (10 minutes to complete) to explore the need for pediatric and orphan devices utilized by PM&R for children with physical disabilities.

Foundation for PM&R Grants
The Foundation for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (FPM&R) provides more than $100,000 in research grant support each year.
The deadline for the spring application grants cycle is May 1. Criteria and application materials can be found at www.foundationforpmr.org under "Research Grants."

Member Highlight: Jeffrey B. Palmer, MD Named Editor-in-Chief of New Scientific Journal
Jeffrey B. Palmer, MD FACRM, Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and AAP Board of Trustees member and AAMC representative, was recently appointed editor-in-chief of a new scientific journal, Current Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Reports.  The quarterly publication offers invited review reports and articles on topics of major importance to the field of rehabilitation medicine, including the treatment of stroke, musculoskeletal disorders and swallowing disorders, as well as interventional pain management and amputee, pediatric, spinal cord and traumatic brain rehabilitation. The first issue was published in March 2013 by Springer.

Innovative Institutional Partnerships in Research and Research-Focused Training
AAMC is announcing its second annual award developed in collaboration with the GREAT Group and GRAND leadership. The 2013 award will highlight innovative ways to create and sustain institutional partnerships in research and research-focused training.

Submissions must describe:
  • An existing or developing collaborative partnership between two or more:
    a) departments, centers, or programs within a school,
    b) schools within an institution, or
    c) unaffiliated institutions;
  • New experiences and lessons learned from the collaboration; and
  • Institutional benefits resulting from the collaboration.
Entries will be evaluated based on creativity, collaborative partnerships, and impact on institutional practices.

Research and research training leaders and faculty in PhD, MD-PhD, and Postdoctoral programs, and of basic, translational, and clinical research, are encouraged to apply. One or more awards to institutions for a total amount of $5000 will be awarded.

New Resources to Help Students Prepare for the Revised MCAT - Video Competition

On April 2, the Association of American Medical Colleges, Khan Academy, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) announced a collaboration to provide free, online resources to help students prepare for the revised Medical College Admission Test� (MCAT�) that will be administered in 2015.

 

To develop the new resources, the three organizations are sponsoring a competition to encourage medical students and residents to create educational tutorials about concepts that will be tested by the new MCAT exam.

 

Contest submissions are now being accepted; the deadline for submissions is June 14, 2013.

Heroic Work of Health Professionals in the Aftermath of the Boston Marathon Bombings

The heroic work of physicians, nurses and other health professionals in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings has been highlighted in several news stories on the tragedy. Some of the articles highlighted the value of coordinated disaster planning exercises in preparing for the tragedy.  The Boston Globe reported that all eight Boston hospitals were involved in treating the injured.
