The nomination period for Kyndle's 2014 Henderson County Agriculture Awards is now open.
Nominations are being accepted through noon on Feb. 26 for Henderson County Agriculturalist of the Year and Lifetime Achievement in Agriculture. The winners will be announced at Kyndle's 2014 Agriculture Appreciation Breakfast, set for 7:15 a.m. on March 6 at the Henderson Fine Arts Center.
The breakfast's featured speaker will be Dr. Nancy Cox, the new Dean of Agriculture at the University of Kentucky. She is the first woman to hold that post. She represents the College on most Kentucky agricultural commodity boards and is on the executive board of the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition. She is responsible for current planning efforts for an Equine Institute and a Food Systems Innovation Center at UK, and she is serving as interim executive director of the Gluck Equine Research Foundation. In 2007 she was named to the National Advisory Board for Research, Extension and Economics; this board advises the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture on research priorities.
Sam Ball will once again MC the popular breakfast, which has seen standing-room-only crowds each of the last four years.
COST
The cost to attend the event is just 88 cents, symbolic of the small profit a farmer would make on the food on a typical breakfast plate. Golden Corral will once again cater the meal.
RESERVATIONS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED
The reservation deadline is close of business on Tuesday, March 4.
Due to the immense popularity of this event, patrons who come to the breakfast without a reservation cannot be guaranteed breakfast or a seat at a table. Theater seating will be available to those without RSVP. For more information or to RSVP, contact Kyndle at [email protected] or (270) 826-7505.
NOMINATIONS
Nominations guidelines for the two agriculture awards are available at the links below. Printed copies of the guidelines will be available at the downtown Henderson locations of local banks, Southern States, Rural King, Crop Production Services, the Henderson County Extension Office and Parrish Shop & Sales. Monty Parrish was the Agriculturalist of the Year winner in 2013, while Pem Pfisterer Clark was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Henderson County: OPERATION PREPARATION
The Kentucky Department of Education's Unbridled Learning: College/Career Readiness for All initiative is designed to ensure every student is prepared for college and/or career by the time they graduate from high school. Advising is a key strategy for reaching this goal. Yet, in Kentucky, school counselors face an average 450:1 student to counselor ratio, presenting challenges for establishing effective advising programs.
Operation Preparation is a joint effort of the Kentucky Department of Education and the Department of Workforce Development and provides a powerful opportunity for schools, students, parents and communities to collaborate in the process of effective advising and focus attention on the importance of planning for college and/or career.
During March, trained volunteer community advisors will meet one-on-one with every 8th- and 10th-grade student. The community advisor will use the student's Individual Learning Plan or ILP (including career interest inventory and EXPLORE/PLAN results) to discuss the student's:
career aspirations, required education/training and workforce skills, whether the student is on target to meet their goals and whether the student is taking the courses recommended to prepare them for a successful future.
It is anticipated that each session will take about 20 minutes. The meeting is designed to provide both information and inspiration for the student to achieve college/career-readiness.
If Kentucky is to remain economically viable and globally competitive, we need to be sure every one of our students and our workforce is prepared and ready to meet the demands of the 21st-century. Operation Preparation is your opportunity to help.

Jinger Carter at 831-5000.
